Hasan confirms he received “warning” from Twitch for showing controversial video on stream

As a long-time Twitch viewer and supporter of Hasan Piker, I find myself increasingly concerned about the platform’s inconsistent content moderation policies. Having watched Hasan’s streams for years, I can attest to his thoughtful and insightful political analysis. Yet, it seems that Twitch’s rigid rules are creating a double standard that unfairly targets him.

In simpler terms, the well-known political streamer, Hasan, shared that Twitch issued him a warning following his broadcast where he displayed a video related to the Houthi group to another content creator, Nmp.

Previously this autumn, Hasan shared a video featuring the Houthi group with his fellow Twitch streamer, Nmp. This action led to quite a stir. Notably, this organization is recognized as a Terrorist Entity by the United States Department of State.

Instead, as per Piker’s statement, Twitch had previously advised him against sharing such videos again. During his stream with Mizkif, he was requested to demonstrate the same clip, but he mentioned he couldn’t due to this restriction.

As a viewer, I was baffled when I found out I couldn’t display that content due to a warning. It’s mind-boggling! It seems acceptable almost everywhere else, but Twitch’s guidelines for moderation are noticeably stricter compared to other platforms.

He pointed out that Twitch’s guidelines for what is permissible are stricter than any other platform. “Usually, such content wouldn’t lead to a ban,” he explained. “Sharing that video shouldn’t result in a ban. It doesn’t on YouTube or Twitter. However, on most websites, it would be fine. But in this case, Twitch is exceptionally strict with its rules.

On this platform, we strictly forbid any content that promotes, celebrates, advocates, or endorses terrorist activities, violent extremists, or extreme violence.

1) The streaming platform and its chief executive, Dan Clancy, have also encountered demands from Democratic Representative Ritchie Torres to “cease promoting individuals who promote anti-Semitism.” (This version maintains the original meaning but uses simpler language to make it more accessible.)

Torres emphasized that Hasan’s political ideologies were particularly problematic. He stated, “Promoting any of these terrorist groups, as Piker did, goes far beyond acceptable limits.

On November 1, Clancy addressed the accusations in a blog post, stating unequivocally that Twitch strongly condemns any form of hate or harassment.

2024 saw Twitch grappling with numerous controversies, as users expressed concerns over the kind of content being approved for broadcast and perceived unevenness in the application of bans.

In response to the ongoing debate, the platform has implemented a fresh function that empowers users to conceal broadcasts containing political discussions and other potentially sensitive topics.
