‘Gagarine’ Star Alseni Bathily Joins Linda Lô’s Buzzy ‘Lucky Girl’ From France’s Maneki Films (EXCLUSIVE)

As a seasoned cinephile who has witnessed the evolution of cinema across continents and decades, I am genuinely intrigued by the upcoming film “Lucky Girl.” The story, inspired by Linda Lö’s personal experiences, resonates deeply with my own understanding of the complexities of migration and identity.

Alseni Barthily, who led the standout film “Gagarine” during Cannes 2020’s main competition, will appear in “Lucky Girl,” which is Linda Lö’s first feature and a highly anticipated project at Maneki Films, set to create quite a stir at the Marrakech Festival’s Atlas Workshops in 2024.

In the showcase of projects in development for The Workshops, titled “Lucky Girl,” penned by Lô, commences with a holiday in Bordeaux. Here, we find Lili, age 4, and her siblings, ages 9 and 20, who are left unsupervised when their vibrant mother departs unexpectedly to Gabon to manage her restaurant-discotheque.

Depicted in three acts – as a little girl, teen and young woman – Lili grows into Linda, determined to make her mother proud and reconnect with her African heritage.

‘Lucky Girl’ is inspired by Lô’s own experience when, as a very young girl, along with her older brothers, she unwillingly migrated to France while their Cameroonian mother stayed in Gabon.

In comparison to Lö’s brief piece ‘We Had Fun’, ‘Lucky Girl’ showcases an enlarged vision, scope, and fantastical elements in its narrative, marking a departure from conventional social dramas within the Atlas Workshops cinematic endeavors.

As a cinephile, I shared with EbMaster my approach to creating a grand narrative spanning three different stages of Lili’s life. This epic tale traverses three decades and three continents, offering an intimate exploration of her journey. Despite achieving success and happiness, the lingering effects of migration often remain unresolved, and this was certainly true for me. Consequently, I infused each chapter with a sense of longing for a paradise left behind.

She mentioned: “As she grew up, Lili wrestled with her identity, trying to embrace the intricacy of belonging to neither one place nor another. Moreover, I plan to delve into and experiment with the concept of untraveled paths in the universe: my coming-of-age film will then embark on a few thrilling detours into fantasy.

Linda’s debut feature, ‘Lucky Girl’, demonstrates her unique directorial vision and world-building abilities. Furthermore, her skills in directing child actors were also evident, which is a significant challenge in feature filmmaking,” stated Didar Domehri, the former head of international sales at Playtime who established Maneki Films, a renowned French independent production company known for producing numerous high-profile festival films such as “Paulina”, “White Elephant”, and “Bang Bang”.

Despite the Cannes Film Festival not taking place on the French Riviera due to COVID-19, Barthily made a remarkable debut with his captivating performance in “Gagarine.” EbMaster praised him as an exceptional new talent. He was nominated for the Lumière Award as the most promising actor and went on to win the Best Actor award at the 2020 Seville European Film Festival.

Domehri expressed their excitement about Alseni joining ‘Lucky Girl.’ They noted that this follows his significant role as the older brother in our previous short film, ‘We Had Fun.’ Since first seeing his exceptional talent in ‘Gagarine,’ we have been huge fans.

As we prepare to embark on the casting phase, I can’t help but reflect on the extensive process ahead. With our film covering three continents and spanning three decades, it’s crucial that we find actors from various countries and age groups. We’re aiming for a 2026 shoot, and I’m pleased to share that Alseni will be the constant throughout this journey.

Maneki is actively discussing partnership possibilities with several prospective co-producers. According to Domehri, “The Atlas Workshops offer an ideal opportunity and setting for connecting with even more potential co-producers, sales representatives, distributors, and financial backers.

Lö and Domehri are set to present “Lucky Girl” at Marrakech, possibly displaying some visuals from the short film as mentioned by Domehri.

From the first-person perspective of a film enthusiast, “I’m excited about two incredible film events happening in December! The Atlas Workshops are set from the 1st to the 5th, and the Marrakech International Film Festival runs from November 29 to December 7. These events promise an unforgettable cinematic journey!
