Dumbledore Actor's Son Questions Why The Harry Potter Reboot Is Even Happening

As a seasoned gamer and avid Harry Potter fan who grew up with the books and movies, I must say that I find Jared Harris’ sentiments about the new HP TV series intriguing. While I agree with him that the films were fantastic and leave them alone might be the best approach, I am also eager to see how the TV series can expand upon the rich tapestry of the Harry Potter universe.

In a recent interview with The Independent, actor Jared Harris, son of the late Oscar-winning Dumbledore portrayer Richard Harris, expressed his lack of interest and raised questions about the necessity of HBO’s upcoming reboot TV series for the Harry Potter franchise, following in his father’s footsteps.

In simpler terms, he expressed his confusion as to why changes were necessary since the films were superb. However, he acknowledged that the upcoming TV series, spanning seven seasons (one for each book), could explore a wealth of narrative elements not included in the films.

People who have read the books recognize that the movies omitted a considerable amount of content. This isn’t just a fan perspective; even the actors themselves share this view. For instance, Gary Oldman, who played Sirius Black, felt that his character wasn’t utilized enough in the films. Similarly, Bonnie Wright, who portrayed Ginny, found it disappointing that her character didn’t get much screen time.

But would Harris consider stepping in to play Dumbledore? “No, thank you,” he said.

The Harry Potter television production is headed by showrunner Francesca Gardiner, a professional who has previously worked on hit series such as Succession and His Dark Materials from HBO. Additionally, Mary Mylod, another Succession collaborator, serves as an executive producer and is slated to direct several episodes of the upcoming series.

Following Richard Harris’s death in 2002, Warner Bros. took over the role of Dumbledore and gave it to Michael Gambon. Tragically, he also passed away in 2023. In the Fantastic Beasts movie series, however, Jude Law portrayed a younger version of Dumbledore.

As a dedicated fan, I’ve been excitedly speculating about who might don the wizard robes as Dumbledore for the upcoming Harry Potter TV series. Sir Ian Oldman jokingly hinted that he could be old enough for the role, but as of now, no definite decision has been made regarding the character. The casting process for our beloved trio – Harry, Hermione, and Ron – is already underway, with an open call for talented actors to fill these iconic roles. Filming for the series is slated to begin next year, with a 2026 premiere on HBO and Max. I can hardly wait to see who will bring this magical world to life on our screens!

In the realm of gaming, I find myself deeply immersed in the captivating universe crafted by J.K. Rowling – the genius behind the Harry Potter saga. Although she’s still connected with this magical franchise, her perspectives on the trans community have cast a lingering shadow over our beloved world.
