Druid Controversy in Dungeonborne, Is It OP?

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that balancing games, especially those with multiplayer and asymmetric gameplay, is a Herculean task. It’s like trying to please every single player in the world, each with their own playstyle and expectations!

Adjusting the balance in a game is no small task. While it’s less critical for solo games, multiplayer titles, especially those involving competition among players, require careful tuning. This becomes even more challenging when you factor in asymmetric gameplay, such as different character classes. A good example of this struggle can be seen with the Druid from Dungeonborne, a free-to-play game. Is the Druid truly overpowered, as some claim? Let’s examine this class to determine if it’s as broken as the community suggests.

Is Druid class OP in Dungeonborne?

When talking about the strength of a Druid in Dungeonborne, it’s essential to keep in mind that this game is still under development. In its Early Access stage, changes are inevitable. As the developers continue to refine the game, modifications will be made to ensure balance within the gameplay. The recent update, for instance, targeted the Druid character and supposedly weakened it. However, one might wonder if that was indeed the case…

As a seasoned gamer with years of experience under my belt, I can tell you that the recent updates to Druid’s abilities have been quite intriguing. While I won’t delve into the nitty-gritty technicalities, here’s what I’ve noticed:

  1. The developers decided to change how Predatory Senses works. Now, instead of being permanent, it activates in specific time intervals, hindering this class’s “wallhack”, how it’s often described by fans.
  2. Druid has been slowed down both in human and panther form to make it more prone to be countered by melee classes. What is more, transformation no longer clears debuffs and one of Panther form’s attacks has increased cooldown.
  3. However, as the creators explain it, to nudge druid players to use riskier, but also rewarding, strategies, all basic attacks in panther form have been buffed. What is more, Shadow Assault skill has been made significantly more powerful, too.

In summary, is this change a weakening of the character? I wouldn’t necessarily agree. Although it alters the way the character is played slightly, the increased damage makes it less of an obstacle. Many players seem to hold similar views, including those who find it challenging to face druids as well as druid class enthusiasts. They argue that playing against this class isn’t enjoyable, and using it isn’t thrilling or demanding either.

With all of that in mind, we have to take into consideration the fact that the developers have access to more precise data, like for example how many people play this class and how often it wins in battles. Moreover, there are players on different levels and understanding of gameplay, yet the changes to classes have to account for both less and more skilled fans, which is often additionally hard. Hence the slow, deliberate changes throughout the EA period to gather ample amount of data that will allow to balance Dungeonborne as best as possible.

After the recent update, let’s take some time to observe its effects before jumping to conclusions. If you find yourself facing difficulties, it might be best to refresh your skills or test your abilities in Mithril Order mode initially.
