As a seasoned theater-goer with a penchant for the macabre and a soft spot for theatrical innovations that push boundaries, I can hardly contain my excitement for Trepany House’s parody production of “Alien Encounter.” Having grown up on the West Coast, Disneyland was a magical playground that often served as a gateway to more sinister realms. And nothing embodies this dichotomy better than the notorious short-lived attraction, “The ExtraTERRORestrial Alien Encounter,” which I remember vividly from my youth.
If you’re not a dedicated Disney enthusiast, chances are you’ve forgotten about the temporary attraction called “The ExtraTERRORestrial Alien Encounter” which operated in the 1990s at Florida’s Magic Kingdom. This immersive performance often received criticism for its high-intensity level. Many people still reminisce about how unsettling the show was when they discuss it on online forums and YouTube comments. Although it may seem outdated now, its innovative use of binaural sound and 4D effects (spraying the audience with fluid and simulating hot breath) was groundbreaking at the time.
Fortunately, spectators can get a glimpse – to some extent – as Trepany House presents a satirical adaptation of “Alien Encounter,” crafted by Adam Franklin and Amit Itelman, and backed by Titmouse. The live performance is happening every weekend in October at the Titmouse Warehouse in Hollywood. However, be aware that it involves blood, quite a bit of it, in fact. Even more so, the press release advises – or perhaps teases – that: “Spectators will find themselves splattered with blood, so dress appropriately.
Regarding what viewers can anticipate, Itelman reveals, “They will be immersed in a 25-minute encounter with a terrifying, flesh-eating alien from another world, whose sole purpose is to wreak havoc on Earth. If you’re familiar with Trepany or Itelman, you know to expect some exceptional special effects and creature design. Many may have first encountered his work through ‘Hollywood Hellhouse’, a unique blend of a haunted house with Christian fundamentalist teachings. His latest project, ‘Bride of Blood’, ran in Los Angeles for over a year before moving to Tokyo, featuring stunning costumes, puppetry, and set pieces that would be impressive for any stage, especially given the small black box theater it was performed in. Discussions are ongoing about publishing a Japanese translation of this show overseas. Various ideas are being proposed — perhaps it will break free from the constraints of live theater. Itelman describes ‘Alien Encounter’ as sharing a kinship with ‘Bride of Blood’, as they both serve as exercises in extreme imagination. He explains, “The stories and drama seem to yearn to escape beyond the stage. They may be too grandiose for the scale they are presented with. That’s true for much of the theater I am involved in. I usually aim high and find a comfortable middle ground.
The plot of this production satirically imitates the classic Disney tale where an audience finds themselves sharing a room with an escaping alien. As Itelman explains, they find the original idea hilarious and full of fun. Although it was far too outlandish for Disney Parks, Itelman humorously suggests that it could have been a Gwar attraction. To further heighten the absurdity, they’ve rewritten the script and added live actors, labeling it as “an original production and a complete reinvention of the initial concept.
