As a seasoned Guardian with countless hours spent in the ever-evolving world of Destiny, I can’t help but feel a surge of excitement when it comes to the upcoming expansion, Revenant. The prospect of new rewards tonics and their similarity to weapon attunement from Into the Light has me intrigued. I remember the days of chasing that elusive god-roll in my favorite weapons, and this seems like an interesting twist on that mechanic.
In the launch of Destiny 2‘s next content episode, Revenant on October 8th, we can anticipate an updated version of its ongoing activity, Onslaught, along with fresh maps and some improvements.
During a live developer broadcast, Bungie previewed the upcoming significant content update for the game, demonstrating gameplay of an updated version called Onslaught: Salvation. This new version offers three distinct maps for the mode, such as Widow’s Court, a multiplayer map located on Earth. Additionally, it introduces fresh waves of adversaries and defensive mechanisms.
The updated Onslaught focuses on an adventure linked to the series plot revolving around the Scorn – the undead extraterrestrial adversaries birthed by the Darkness during the Forsaken expansion of 2018. The narrative picks up from where Destiny 2’s recent expansion, The Final Shape, left off and is further explored in the latest episode, Echoes. The annihilation of the Witness generated potent artifacts known as Echoes, one of which was obtained by Maya Sundaresh in the previous episode to boost and elevate the Vex. In Revenant, another Echo comes into possession of the Fanatic, leader of the Scorn from Forsaken, who’s using it for the evolution of the Scorn in novel ways.
Essentially, in Onslaught: Salvation, you’ll find yourself engaged in combat against Scorn enemies and their questionable allies, the Cabal Shadow Legion, who are aligned with the Darkness. The antagonist, known as The Fanatic, is working towards expanding his horde of undead throughout the narrative, which primarily consists of the Eliksni, or Fallen aliens.
Similar to its predecessor, Onslaught: Salvation offers three variations: a 10-wave playlist version, a challenging 50-wave full version, and a 50-wave Expert mode. Prepare for a more demanding experience compared to the original Onslaught, as Salvation is designed with Power level in mind. This means your weapon and armor stats will influence how powerful you are within the game. As such, you can anticipate the mode being tougher initially during the season, as players gradually level up towards the new Power cap, which is 10 levels above the current ones.
In this new version, you’ll encounter enhanced and modernized defensive options to assist you in overcoming challenges. These innovations consist of a manually operated turret, a feature not seen in the game since Destiny 1’s moon, a call-in air strike that engages when enemies step on and activate it, and revamped trip mines that will now establish Stasis fields, with upgraded versions creating Stasis crystals as well.
This upcoming season might be quite emotional, as the Scorn are the unintended offspring of Uldren Sov, now known as Guardian Crow. In Destiny lore, when someone becomes a Guardian upon resurrection, they lose their past memories; however, due to prior storyline twists, Crow retains Uldren’s memories. This gives him a profound sense of duty towards the Scorn and the terrible deeds they commit. It seems that Crow will play a significant role in this episode due to his extensive narrative background.
In addition, Mithrax and his daughter Eido, significant Eliksni characters, frequently appear in The Revenant. It’s likely that Eido will serve as the primary vendor for this episode, similar to Failsafe in Echoes. A key new feature of The Revenant is crafting “potions” with Eido, which have distinct effects.
Tonics can be divided into two main groups: combat-focused and reward-oriented. In the combat category, potions crafted will enhance the bonuses derived from this episode’s Artifact modifications. The rarer the ingredients used in creating a potion, the more mods you might simultaneously boost, making it beneficial to pursue better resources and be mindful of your creations.
In a manner similar to weapon attunement in “Into the Light”, using a reward tonic for a particular weapon will boost its drop rate, and at higher rarities, you may even acquire improved traits for those weapons. Just like in “Into the Light”, these attunements don’t guarantee that the weapon will drop every time, but they do increase the chance of favorable random drops as you play. It’s worth mentioning that unlike previous episodes, the weapons in this one can’t be crafted, so tonics are essential if you want to pursue specific weapon rolls.
For rewards in Revenant, you’ll encounter numerous weapons emphasizing Stasis and compatibility with Stasis-centric gameplay. The recent livestream unveiled the episode’s Season Pass Exotic weapon, a Stasis-based, breech-loading grenade launcher—the second primary ammo grenade launcher in the game following Fighting Lion. This powerful grenade launcher, as demonstrated during the stream, is formidable on its own, but its support capabilities might be even more intriguing. Achieving kills with the launcher produces “remnant” items that float around and can be picked up, similar to the Exotic hand cannon Thorn. These remnants gradually charge the weapon’s Exotic perk. When the weapon reaches 50% charge, you can use a special reload function to produce a block of special ammo for your teammates; when it reaches 100%, the gun generates heavy ammo instead.
In this upcoming episode, you can anticipate that Stasis and grenade launchers will take center stage. During a sneak peek at Revenant Act 1’s Artifact, Bungie revealed some intriguing aspects. Many of these revelations will enhance your Stasis-based builds and grenade launchers. One exciting bonus is an updated version of the popular perk Breach and Clear, now called Concussive Reload. This new feature equips grenade launchers to weaken enemies with each use.
Bungie talked about the return of Ice Breaker, a potent Destiny 1 Exotic sniper rifle coming to Destiny 2. The original Ice Breaker would automatically regenerate ammo but couldn’t be manually reloaded, which caused some confusion in Destiny’s ammo system. However, the updated version aims to keep its main feature of being a continuously available weapon without disrupting game balance. As per Bungie, the revamped Ice Breaker will receive ammo upon scoring kills and assists with other weapons. This means it could be used effectively against bosses for significant damage over an extended period, with ammo generation occurring by helping your teammates defeat enemies during breaks in the damage phases.
As a dedicated fan, I’m thrilled to share that Bungie has hinted at some exciting updates! Revenant is set to include a refurbished Crucible map in its PvP rotation, which we’ve been eagerly waiting for. Moreover, during the stream, developers dropped a bombshell about a classic Strike making a comeback: the Inverted Spire on Nessus. This Strike has undergone some significant changes and enhancements, with an apparent surge in laser traps designed to catch unsuspecting players off guard!
In conclusion, we’ve had a brief glimpse at an extra feature: a fresh skimmer board that gamers can acquire within the game. Skimmers are like hoverboards taking over the role of your Sparrow as your ground vehicle, but they aren’t common; the last time such a skimmer was obtainable in-game was during the Guardian Games in March. The new skimmer, called The Xurfboard, will be purchasable from Xur for 97 Strange Coins when the new episode debuts, so it may be wise to start hoarding coins.
Experience Bungie’s entire developer live stream, where Onslaught: Salvation and other Revenant features come alive, right at your fingertips! Keep in mind that Revenant is set to debut on October 8. If there are any remaining items from Episode: Echoes you need to acquire, you have just a week left.
