Cannes Prizewinner ‘All We Imagine as Light’ to Begin Indian Oscar-Qualifying Run With Kerala Theatrical Release (EXCLUSIVE)

As a cinephile with a penchant for stories that resonate deeply, I find myself captivated by the imminent release of “All We Imagine as Light.” Having spent a considerable amount of time in India and being particularly fond of Malayalam cinema, I eagerly anticipate the Kerala premiere of this poignant film.

The two nurses hailing from Kerala, the southern region of India, who star in Payal Kapadia’s award-winning film “All We Imagine as Light,” are set to embark on a theatrical adventure starting from their hometown.

In her first directorial venture, Kapadia pens and guides the story, focusing on two women from Kerala residing in Mumbai: Prabha, a troubled nurse who encounters an unforeseen present from her absent spouse, and Anu, her youthful roommate yearning for privacy with her lover. A journey to a coastal town offers them the room to explore their desires. The film, awarded the Grand Prix at Cannes this year, features Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, and Hridhu Haroon, all natives of Kerala.

Under the guidance of actor Rana Daggubati, founder of Spirit Media, the company has obtained distribution rights for a Malayalam and Hindi-language film within India. Starting from September 21st, this movie will be screened in select cinemas across Kerala, serving as its qualifying release to be considered as India’s entry for the Oscars’ international feature category.

The movie was created by Thomas Hakim and Julian Graff from their French production company Petit Chaos. They collaborated with various companies based in India, including Zico Maitra’s Chalk & Cheese Films and Ranabir Das’ Another Birth, as well as BALDR Film from the Netherlands, Les Films Fauves from Luxembourg, Pulpa Films from Italy, and Arte France Cinéma from France. The film was among the French Oscar nominations, but ultimately “Emilia Perez,” a redemption thriller by auteur Jacques Audiard, was chosen to represent France in the international feature film competition, which it went on to win two significant awards at Cannes Film Festival.

In the Indian state of Kerala, Malayalam is the primary language spoken. The movie titled “All We Imagine as Light” will debut in Kerala under the local title “Prabhayay Ninachathellam.” After its premiere in Kerala, the film plans to be screened across major cities throughout India.

Daggubati expressed his delight in introducing this remarkable movie to Indian audiences, beginning with Kerala, as the main characters hail from there. With its deep roots in storytelling, Indian cinema offers a unique perspective, and this film embodies the Indian experience by portraying characters who speak various languages and originate from diverse regions of the country, all striving towards the bustling city of Mumbai with common aspirations.” (EbMaster was mentioned as a publication in the original text)
