As a seasoned gamer with countless hours spent battling it out in online arenas, I can’t help but feel a mix of frustration and amusement when reading about this latest study on anti-cheat software effectiveness. On one hand, it’s disheartening to know that cheaters are still raking in the dough, exploiting loopholes and undermining the fairness of the game for the rest of us. But on the other hand, I can’t help but chuckle at the irony – these cheaters, who rely on technology to gain an unfair advantage, are themselves outsmarted by another piece of tech designed to detect them.
A recent analysis on anti-cheating solutions in video games showcased the most efficient options and shed some light on the financially rewarding black market of cheat creation.
For a while now, the problem of cheating in digital games has been a significant challenge that game developers have been working hard to overcome. They are continuously striving to outsmart programmers who create cheat tools like aim assist, wall penetration software, and various other unethical instruments.
In 2024, a study conducted by the University of Birmingham was released, examining 80 online platforms offering game cheats and assessing the efficiency of various anti-cheat systems in identifying these unauthorized tools.
The research indicates that individuals who sell cheats are reaping substantial profits. The authors have estimated, on the conservative side, that their annual income falls somewhere between 12.8 million dollars and 73.2 million dollars.
As a dedicated enthusiast, I’ve come to realize that the cost of these cheats seems to be directly linked with the robustness of the anti-cheat software they aim to bypass. This correlation outweighs any other factor, even the fame or popularity of the game being targeted by the cheat, which might come as a shock to some.
Additionally, the research found that certain game titles excel in anti-cheat measures, placing Valorant and Fortnite at the top of the pack compared to other competitors.
Warzone.
Leading Contenders: Valorant (Position 1.1), backed by Riot’s Vanguard, provides robust protections at both user and kernel levels, even launching during system startup, ensuring maximum security.
Similarly, Fortnite (Position 1.2) ranks high due to its kernel-level anti-cheat mechanism, incorporating multiple proactive measures…

Although designed as a high-level anti-cheat system targeting kernel experiments, it failed to identify any of our tests in this area. Interestingly, Ricochet managed to detect the majority of attack attempts, but it was discovered that it lacks a stringent ban policy and does not enforce hardware ID-based bans.
This research arises as Black Ops 6 gamers express growing worries over the Ricochet system’s inability to distinguish between cheaters and wrongfully accused players, leading to unjust bans.
Despite the ongoing battle against cheaters, certain game studios are leveraging legal means to their benefit. For instance, earlier this year, the creators of Destiny 2, Bungie, won a lawsuit against AimJunkies and received $4.4 million in damages.
