Thunderbolts* Director Reveals if Man-Thing Was Almost in MCU Movie

Director Jake Schreier, who helmed “Thunderbolts”, has explained just how near the “Werewolf by Night” character Man-Thing was from joining the main cast of the squad.

Previously in April, Schreier shared with SFX Magazine his desire to include Man-Thing as a team member. More recently, during an interview with ComicBookMovie.com, the director clarified that Werewolf by Night, a character much loved by fans, was not seriously considered for inclusion in the Thunderbolts team*.

Man-Thing was never seriously considered for Thunderbolts*

During our discussions, adding Man-Thing to Thunderbolts didn’t materialize at all,” Schreier explained to ComicBookMovie. “I was still figuring out the ropes of these interviews and what gets reported. In essence, my suggestion was just a casual remark. It was from my initial meeting about the movie, but I hadn’t been officially brought on board yet. What I didn’t realize was that Man-Thing was already tied up in Werewolf by Night.

The director remarked, “Prior to Robert Reynolds joining the narrative, it held less emphasis. But once he became involved, the spotlight shifted significantly. He was an intriguing figure. We constructed the story around our characters and him, centering on his experiences. Essentially, we concentrated on that team and finding the optimal way to create a remarkable movie from them.

Currently, Marvel Studios hasn’t disclosed any intentions for a Werewolf by Night sequel or spin-off, despite the critically acclaimed black-and-white Disney+ special being well-received by audiences. The storyline revolves around a clandestine group of monster hunters at Bloodstone Temple who find themselves in a dangerous and enigmatic competition for a potent artifact. Given its positive reception, it’s surprising that no sequel has been confirmed as of yet.

You can stream the movie “Werewolf by Night” on Disney+ now, whereas “Thunderbolts” will be released on Blu-ray and DVD on July 29, 2025.

*Note: Thunderbolts is a fictional team in Marvel Comics, and it doesn’t have a movie release date as of now.
