Microsoft No Longer Offers Movies And TV Shows To Buy Or Rent, But There Are Other Ways

Effective from July 18, Microsoft has ceased providing an option for users to purchase or rent movies and TV shows via their Xbox platform or the Windows online store.

As a devoted fan, I’ve noticed that all the movies and TV shows I’ve previously purchased can still be accessed through the Movies & TV app. However, Microsoft has chosen to discontinue the purchasing feature. For those of us in the US, it’s now possible to join Movies Anywhere to enjoy “select” previously bought content across various platforms.

Should this news be troubling and you’re considering a refund, I regret to inform you that, according to Microsoft, their terms do not allow refunds for movies and TV shows.

Microsoft hasn’t provided an explanation for the issue, but their FAQ on the shutdown suggests that Xbox and Microsoft Store users can acquire and stream movies and TV shows from multiple platforms such as Amazon Prime Video, Fandango Now, Apple TV, among others, as alternative sources.

Back in 2012, I discovered the Movies & TV app under its original name, Xbox Video. Fast forward to 2024, I sadly bid farewell to the Movies & TV app for Xbox 360, which ceased operation at the end of July that year.

Meanwhile, regarding Xbox updates, Microsoft has been generating buzz due to a fresh wave of layoffs resulting in game projects being scrapped and even one studio shutting down. Simultaneously, Microsoft continues to move forward with the development of a new console, revealing an alliance with AMD for it.
