Star Trek 4: Former Director Reveals How Chris Pine Sequel Fell Apart

Initially, director Matt Shakman was intended for Star Trek 4, a movie by Paramount Pictures that has been stalled during development since 2015. Unfortunately, due to numerous creative hurdles, Shakman ultimately chose to leave the project and instead take on the role of directing Marvel Studios’ The Fantastic Four: First Steps.

In a recent conversation with Variety, Shakman chose not to reveal details about the narrative of his abandoned project, expressing hope that one day, the studio will produce Star Trek 4, at which point he may share more information.

In my opinion, the main concept stays consistent. I truly wish they have an opportunity to produce that film,” he expressed.

As a dedicated film enthusiast, I can’t help but share some insights into the pre-production phase of Star Trek 4, which I was unfortunately unable to bring to life in 2022. The project had been on the cusp of actualization, with sets and crew already assembled. We were indeed making significant strides forward. However, the script took an unexpected turn, becoming so drastically different that we were forced to disband our crew and dismantle the stages we’d meticulously built.

In March 2024, Steve Yockey was appointed to write a new script for an upcoming project. However, as of now, there is no director attached to this project following Shakman’s departure. This new movie has been in development for three years now, with J.J. Abrams previously announcing that Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, John Cho, and Simon Pegg would be returning to their roles from the original Star Trek films released in 2009, 2013, and 2016. It remains uncertain if they will indeed appear in the fourth installment of this series.
