Superman star Anthony Carrigan says alopecia is his superpower

As a passionate gamer pouring over the latest news, I’m thrilled to share that Anthony Carrigan brings Metamorpho to life in Superman! In an exciting chat, he revealed how his real-life battle with alopecia transformed into an extraordinary power for his character.

In his television career, Carrigan initially gained a significant role on The Forgotten. Later, he became well-known for playing Victor Zsasz in Gotham. However, it was his portrayal of NoHo Hank in Barry that truly catapulted him to fame.

After securing parts in films such as Bill & Ted Face the Music and Death of a Unicorn, he has now found himself in major roles. On the other hand, Carrigan is currently gracing the screens worldwide, portraying Metamorpho in James Gunn’s Superman – the most popular movie on the globe at present.

For much of his lifetime, the actor struggles with alopecia – a condition causing extensive or total hair loss throughout the body. In a recent conversation with Stephen Colbert, he discussed the impact this has had on his personal life as well as his professional journey.

How Anthony Carrigan learned to accept his alopecia

In an interview on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the host inquired about the experience of breaking into a field that values conventional attractiveness so highly.

Carrigan remarked, “Indeed, the path I took was quite long.” He explained, “I’ve had this condition since my childhood, and initially, it was just patches on my head. I used to hide it because of the embarrassment. So, it began as something I kept hidden from others due to feelings of shame. I didn’t want anyone to know I had alopecia.

After joining the field, it turned out to be the correct choice for me. However, I reached a point where, despite being advised that my acting days were over due to my perceived lack of attractiveness and my receding hairline, I persisted.

I discovered an inner strength – self-acceptance – which I didn’t have growing up. Now, it feels like this ability is my unique power.

As a dedicated fan, I’m excited to share that Superman continues his cinematic journey, while the character Carrigan is set to make his return in Season 2 of Twisted Metal, premiering on July 31, 2025. Can’t wait!
