In my humble opinion, each contestant on “The Masked Singer” brings a unique blend of talent, mystery, and intrigue that keeps viewers hooked week after week. However, the Wasp stands out as a powerhouse performer who embodies determination, resilience, and a fierce competitive spirit reminiscent of her life journey.
⚠️ Here’s a sneak peek at the latest episode of “The Masked Singer”! On Wednesday, December 11, Fox broadcasted Season 12, Episode 11 titled “Semi Finals: Final Three.
Originally, AJ Michalka and her sister Aly were intended to perform together on “The Masked Singer” as part of their musical duo, Aly & AJ. However, since Aly had just given birth to her first child and couldn’t participate, AJ chose to perform on the show solo. To everyone’s surprise, she advanced quite far in the competition, ultimately being unmasked on Wednesday’s episode before the final of Season 12 as Strawberry Shortcake.
Originally, we had planned to tackle it as a team, and I must say, the prospect was exhilarating. However, coordinating our schedules proved challenging. In the end, I opted to go solo, but she wholeheartedly encouraged my decision.
Michalka explained that the thrill and difficulty stemmed from the fact that she hadn’t previously taken the stage alone, without her sister. She yearned to test her abilities as a solo artist and discover how far she could go. It turned out to be a lot of fun. She didn’t anticipate how tough it would be to sing while wearing such a heavy mask, but she managed, and she’s incredibly proud of herself.
Michalka sang “Lose You to Love Me,” by Selena Gomez, as her final number; she had previously performed “Slow Burn,” by Kacey Musgraves, “Wrecking Ball,” by Miley Cyrus, “I Hope You Dance,” by Lee Ann Womack, and “Closer,” by Tegan and Sara, on the show. Songs she had prepped but didn’t get a chance to perform were “What Was I Made For,” by Billie Eilish, and “Why Can’t I” by Liz Phair.
She expressed her delight in having the freedom to pick her own tunes, adding that feeling at ease with the choice of material brought her great joy.
Michalka revealed that her most cherished stage appearance was “I Hope You Dance,” a number she dedicated to her mother. She explained, “My mom was an exceptionally talented vocalist, but has grappled with self-doubt and ceased singing altogether.” She added, “Performing this song served as my encouragement for her to step back into the spotlight.
Neither Strawberry Shortcake was correctly identified by the panelists; instead, Jenny McCarthy-Wahlberg suggested Sarah Hyland, Robin Thicke believed it to be Kelsea Ballerini, and Ken Jeong proposed Joey King. Regrettably, Rita Ora was unable to attend due to illness.
As a passionate moviegoer, I’ve just witnessed an incredible twist in “The Masked Singer” that left fans on the edge of their seats. In what host Nick Cannon declared as the tightest race in the show’s history, with a difference so minuscule it was less than 1%, the charismatic Wasp snatched the top Semi Final votes, catapulting him directly into the finals. This performance was nothing short of spectacular!
In the ensuing competition, I found myself squaring off against Strawberry Shortcake for the remaining position. We both performed “Counting Stars” by OneRepublic, but in the end, it was me who advanced, leaving Strawberry Shortcake out of contention.
The Semi-Finals kicked off featuring performances from Wasp, Strawberry Shortcake, and the Buffalos singing “Some Nights” by Fun. With Strawberry Shortcake now unveiled, this leaves only Wasp and the Buffalos to compete against each other in next week’s season finale.
In the 12th season of “The Masked Singer,” AJ Michalka was revealed to be Strawberry Shortcake, Kobie Turner was Goo, Jana Kramer became Royal Knight, Bronson Arroyo took on the role of Sherlock Hound, Drake Bell transformed into Ice King, Bethany Hamilton was Macaron, Natalie Imbruglia was Bluebell, Laverne Cox was Chess Piece, Andy Richter was unmasked as Dusty Bunny, Paula Cole was Ship, Marsai Martin was Woodpecker, Yvette Nicole Brown was Showbird, and John Elway was Leaf Sheep – these are the celebrities who were unveiled.
For the upcoming Season 12, we have the return of our host Nick Cannon, joined by recurring panelists Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg, Ken Jeong, and Robin Thicke. Additionally, Ora is back again this season, stepping in for Nicole Scherzinger as she continues to hold her position at the desk.
Season 12 of “The Masked Singer” features special episodes dedicated to the 65th anniversary of Mattel’s Barbie and the 40th anniversary of the movie “Footloose”. Miley Cyrus will have an episode focusing on her music, and there’s a new event called “Who Are You Fest”, showcasing popular festival lineups. Additionally, there’s a “Sports Night” and a “60’s Night”. Returning themes are “Soundtrack of My Life” and “Thanksgiving Night.
This new season introduces clues hidden within costumes, song selections, and stage performances. The fifteen celebrity participants will have a “Celebrity Masked Mentor” comprised of past competitors such as Dick Van Dyke (Season 9’s Gnome), Jewel (Season 6 champion as the Queen of Hearts), Ne-yo (Season 10 winner as the Cow), and DeMarcus Ware (Season 11’s Koala). Additionally, the “Ding Dong Keep It On” bell makes its return, but only one singer from each group final will be spared.
As a cinema enthusiast, I can’t wait to dive into Season 12 where a vibrant ensemble of 15 contestants is set to captivate us! Their innovative costumes range from the majestic “Ship,” the whimsical “Leaf Sheep,” the intriguing “Woodpecker,” the strategic “Chess Piece,” the enchanting “Bluebell,” the robust “Buffalo,” the mysterious “Showbird,” the adorable “Dust Bunny,” the creative “Goo,” the sweet “Strawberry Shortcake,” the aggressive “Wasp,” the intellectual “Sherlock Hound,” the royal “Royal Knight,” the icy “Ice King,” and the delectable “Macaron.” Each one promises an unforgettable performance!
Here were performances on Wednesday’s Episode 11, “Semi Finals: Final Three”:
Strawberry Shortcake
Song: “Lose You to Love Me,” by Selena Gomez
Panel guesses: Joey King, Sarah Hyland, Lucy Hale
What have you learned: “I have learned that I’m resilient and strong. And I’m just so happy to be here on stage. Those words mean so much to me. I love being here. This is what I love to do. I took a long break from it. And I’m so glad I came back. This is where I’m supposed to be.”
Friendship Bracelet Hint for Ken Jeong: “Hinting at Ken Jeong: ‘Tour de Presse.’ Reminds me of an exceptional moment in my professional journey – our joint press tour. Your humor kept me grinning all day long.
Strawberry Shortcake voiceover: “Wow, this competition season has been far from a walk in the park! I’m incredibly proud to have made it this far amidst all that turbulence. What they don’t tell you about Hollywood is that, like a scrumptious cake, it’s layered. It sparkles and is loads of fun, but there’s also tremendous pressure to succeed. And with that comes rejection, self-doubt, and feelings of pouring your heart into something people might never see. This is what makes some people lose their passion for their dreams. I remember this feeling all too well – the early fame drama had me burned out. So, I decided to take a long break. I needed to dim the spotlight to rekindle my love for what I do. Becoming Strawberry Shortcake reminds me of why I started this journey so many years ago. It’s fun, it’s whimsical, and it feels like me. There’s pressure to make it to the finale, but honestly, I don’t want this delicious experience to end.
Previously played tracks include “Slow Burn” by Kacey Musgraves, “Wrecking Ball” by Miley Cyrus, “I Hope You Dance” by Lee Ann Womack, and “Closer” by Tegan and Sara.
Previous Contenders: Renee Rapp, Lana del Rey, Rachel Ziegler, Chloe Fineman, Hilary Duff, Ashley Tisdale, Kelsea Ballerini, Hailee Steinfeld, Selena Gomez, Katy Perry, Haylie Duff, Danielle Haim (List of potential candidates)
Buffalos
Song: “Africa,” by Toto
Panel guesses: Boyz II Men, Color Me Badd, After 7
To begin with, I wouldn’t have imagined anyone wearing a buffalo mask, but now that I am, it’s an extraordinary experience to be here with my siblings and the greatest friends I’ve ever known.
Hint for Friendship Bracelet: This one is for Jenny McCarthy-Wahlberg. It reads “Donnie,” symbolizing our long history with Donnie, and also representing the connection we share with you.
Buffalo’s Narration: “Ah, look who’s nearly at the finish line! We’ve put in a lot of effort to get here, but we’re no strangers to perseverance. Along the way, we faced challenges that seemed insurmountable. People told us we should be something else, something we weren’t, and that we wouldn’t make it. But we chose to ignore them and stay true to ourselves, which turned out to be the key to our success. We hope this has been a valuable lesson for the upcoming generation, particularly our children. They have an amazing talent for singing, and guess what? They sound better than us! It’s almost unbelievable. Their voices have given us a new purpose, a reason to keep going. Everything we do now as the three Buffalos is with them in mind, ensuring they have everything they need in life. I can’t wait for them to see their parents up here making a difference as inspirational Buffalos. Maybe one day, it will be their turn. Kids, we love you so much. This is all for you.
As a movie buff reminiscing, I’d say: “Songs like ‘(I Just) Died In Your Arms’ by Cutting Crew, ‘Waiting For a Girl Like You’ by Foreigner, ‘Bittersweet Symphony’ by The Verve, and ‘You’re Still the One’ by Shania Twain have been my melodious companions in the past.
Past Attempts at Identification: Backstreet Kids, Wind of Earth and Fire, 98 Degrees in the Morning, Bell Biv Devoe, Duo 12, Men from Boyz II, Big Time Rush, Harmony with Bones, Black Eyed Peas, Temptations, Tony! Toni! Toné!, Blackstreet Collective
Wasp
Song: “Beautiful Things,” by Benson Boone
Panel guesses: Anthony Ramos, Maxwell, Jason Derulo, Usher
Something you’d like to say to young wasps: “I want you to remember your power. As you get older, never forget that child you once were. Always keep dreaming, and believe in yourself no matter how dark it gets. No matter how many times you fall, you can always get up and fly again.”
Hinting at Robin Thicke. “Nashville.” “Recall, Robin, those unforgettable nights we spent painting the town red in Nashville? Such a blast, don’t you think?
Wasp’s narration: “Transforming into Wasp, I’ve never felt more powerful. It’s ignited this intense competitive spirit within me that I haven’t felt since childhood. My mother knew there wouldn’t be many chances for me to escape our neighborhood. So when she spotted a poster for a talent show, she enrolled me immediately without hesitation. I was taken aback, but I found the determination deep within me and emerged victorious. An influential figure in the industry was present and offered me a contract right then and there. What an unforgettable moment! Tonight, I face some tough competition. To be honest, I’m petrified at the thought of missing out on this final opportunity to seize victory. This golden mask is determined to win the golden mask, you’ve been warned!
