As a seasoned cinephile with decades of movie-going experiences under my belt, I must say that the anticipation for “The Brutalist” has reached an all-time high. Having been fortunate enough to have witnessed the rise and fall of various film formats, I can confidently assert that this 70mm screening is a rare gem worth cherishing.
UPDATE: “The Brutalist” is set to premiere at IMAX! Early-access screenings in New York and Los Angeles on December 18th are now open for ticket sales. The film will subsequently be shown on IMAX screens nationwide through January.
Earlier, it was announced that A24 will be showcasing “The Brutalist” in the 70mm format for the first time. This film is set to debut in this specific format starting from December 19, simultaneously in New York City and Los Angeles.
Tickets can currently be bought for the Village East Cinemas in New York City and the Vista Theatre in Los Angeles. Further cities and dates will be disclosed shortly.
The movie ‘The Brutalist,’ an extended epic running over three hours and helmed by director Brady Corbet with star Adrien Brody, was shot in VistaVision – a superior resolution format boasting a broader perspective. This means that when shown on 70mm, the visuals appear exceptionally clear. In fact, this film reels out an impressive four miles of celluloid, weighing a significant 259 pounds.
70mm movie-goers will be presented with a collectible brochure and postcard set featuring the architecture designs of fictional character László Toth, portrayed by actor Brody, who is pivotal to the film’s story. Additionally, each ticket includes a special commemorative poster as well.
Corbet’s latest work, titled ‘The Brutalist,’ has been labeled as a strong candidate for the Oscars. In his evaluation for EbMaster, lead film critic Owen Gleiberman commended the movie, stating it moves at an engaging pace and is rich in events and emotions.
The movie, boasting an impressively modest budget of $10 million, tells the story of a visionary architect and Holocaust survivor who struggles to rebuild his life in post-war America. In the beginning, he is compelled to live in poverty, but eventually secures a contract that sets his life on a new path. “The Brutalist” had its world debut at the Venice International Film Festival on September 1st. Its limited screening in the U.S. is scheduled for December 20th, with a broader release expected in January.
