As a seasoned movie enthusiast with a soft spot for Disney classics, I must say that the upcoming live-action adaptation of “Tangled” has me positively giddy! The combination of Michael Gracey‘s flair for the spectacular (remember “The Greatest Showman”?), Jennifer Kaytin Robinson’s knack for creating captivating stories, and a yet-to-be-revealed cast is simply irresistible.
“Tangled” is the latest Disney movie to get the live-action treatment.
The creative team is working on a fresh adaptation of the 2010 animated film, featuring Rapunzel, the enchanted princess with incredibly long hair, in a contemporary musical setting. There are discussions underway for “The Greatest Showman” director Michael Gracey to helm this project, based on a script penned by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, who is known for series like Netflix’s witty dark comedy “Do Revenge,” as well as “Thor: Love and Thunder,” the upcoming reboot of “I Know What You Did Last Summer.” At present, no casting decisions have been made.
The movie “Tangled” follows the journey of Rapunzel, a princess voiced by Mandy Moore, who is eventually freed from her isolated tower by a rogue named Flynn Rider. Released around Thanksgiving, this popular film amassed $592 million worldwide, although its earnings could have been greater had the production costs not allegedly reached $260 million. Notably, “Tangled” features the Oscar-nominated song “When Will My Life Begin,” and has led to spinoffs such as the 2012 short film “Tangled Ever After” and the 2017 TV series “Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure.
Disney has transformed multiple animated classics like “The Lion King,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “Aladdin,” “Mulan,” “Dumbo,” and “The Little Mermaid” into live-action films, with varying levels of popularity. In 2025, “Snow White” and “Lilo & Stitch” are scheduled to hit theaters, followed by “Moana” in 2026, featuring Dwayne Johnson as the tattooed demigod Maui.
