As a seasoned cinephile who has traversed the cinematic savannah for decades, I must confess that my heart was not initially pounding with anticipation for a “Lion King” prequel. However, after reading these glowing reviews, I find myself as giddy as Simba on his first wildebeest hunt!
Initial responses to Disney’s “Mufasa: The Lion King” are flooding social media platforms, with critics and fans alike expressing enthusiasm for this upcoming prequel to the 2019 photorealistic reboot of “The Lion King.
Jazz Tangcay, one of EbMaster‘s senior artisans editors, stated that ‘Mufasa: The Lion King’ is a flawlessly made prequel. He praised the melodies by Lin-Manuel Miranda and Nicholas Britell’s score as heavenly and a delight to listen to. In his opinion, it brings nothing but happiness.
Film critic Dana Abercrombie highly commended the movie, stating it’s a compelling tale that provokes contemplation about fate. Impeccably penned and produced, this installment expands the ‘The Lion King’ series by offering deeper insights into beloved characters we thought were familiar. The visual effects are truly remarkable.
Chris Killian from ComicBook.com acknowledged that a “Lion King” prequel wasn’t necessarily on his wish list, but he was impressed by the exceptional animation, the catchy songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda, and the outstanding vocal performances, which he believes make the character of ‘Mufasa’ even stronger compared to the 2019 version of “The Lion King”.
Film critic Dempsey Pillot expressed delight, commenting that “Mufasa: The Lion King” is exceptionally good. Given Barry Jenkins’ talent, this comes as no surprise as the film offers a captivating biblical interpretation of destiny, cleverly masked as an origin tale for both Mufasa and Scar. The entertainment value is high, and Lin-Manuel Miranda’s music lives up to expectations, visually it’s stunning too!
Under the guidance of director Barry Jenkins (“Moonlight”), “Mufasa” delves into the formative years of the future king of Pride Rock, detailing the friendship turned rivalry between Mufasa and Scar, who is actually known as Taka.
In this new adaptation of “The Lion King,” Aaron Pierre takes on the role of a younger Mufasa, while Kelvin Harrison Jr. portrays the youthful Scar. Other fresh voices include Blue Ivy Carter as Kiara, Simba and Nala’s daughter; Tiffany Boone as Sarabi; Kagiso Lediga as Young Rafiki; Preston Nyman as Zazu; Mads Mikkelsen as a powerful lion named Kiros; Thandiwe Newton as Eshe, the mother of Taka; Lennie James as Obasi, Taka’s father; Anika Noni Rose as Mufasa’s mother, Afia; and Keith David as Masego, Mufasa’s father. Returning cast members from the previous remake include Donald Glover, Seth Rogen, Billy Eichner, John Kani, and Beyoncé Knowles-Carter.
Lin-Manuel Miranda composed the movie’s tunes, co-produced them alongside Mark Mancina, while also contributing extra music and performances from Lebo M.
