Mr. Chalamet Man, Play a Song for Us

As an old-time movie buff who’s seen his fair share of biopics, I must say, Timothée Chalamet‘s transformation into Bob Dylan in James Mangold’s “A Complete Unknown” has me intrigued and excited! The trailer showcases a young Timmy T slipping effortlessly into the rock-star lifestyle, singing covers of iconic Dylan songs like a pro. It’s quite impressive to see him embody the Bard of Duluth so convincingly.

Actor Timothée Chalamet is transitioning from Barb to Bob, as he takes on the role of Bob Dylan in James Mangold’s movie, titled “A Complete Unknown,” set for release on December 25. Fans will finally get to witness the fruits of Chalamet’s extensive preparation for this part, which reportedly involved listening to a 12-hour long playlist of unreleased Dylan songs. The film focuses on the pivotal moment at the Newport Music Festival when Dylan went electric, a scene that has been portrayed previously in Todd Haynes’ movie “I’m Not There” and perhaps also in “Factory Girl“. Nonetheless, let’s allow Li’l Timmy T to serenade you with his talents…

Ladies and gentlemen, the trailer.

As a passionate cinephile, I find myself immersed in Timothée Chalamet’s portrayal of a rock-star figure, mastering an impressive vocal imitation. In the latest trailer for A Complete Unknown, he performs captivating covers of “Girl From the North Country” and “Like a Rolling Stone”, mirroring Bob Dylan’s tumultuous journey from Minnesota to New York in pursuit of his dreams. He’s seen smoking, singing, and caught up in a love triangle, all while wrestling with the type of music he wishes to create. Some are asking him to tone it down, but his desire is to let it roar loud. Experience the Bob Dylan essence in the full clip above.

What do we know so far?

The filming was completed by early July, as images reveal Timothée Chalamet, donning sunglasses and engrossed in a book, standing near a car on the movie set, and relaxing on a bench.

Mr. Chalamet Man, Play a Song for Us

Earlier this May during the Cannes Film Festival, while promoting “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” Mangold disclosed details about an upcoming project in which Benedict Cumberbatch was initially cast as folk legend Pete Seeger. The director revealed this news. Interestingly, Pete Seeger was a key supporter of Bob Dylan even before his rise to fame, inviting him to perform at Newport for the first time. However, it seems that scheduling conflicts led to Edward Norton taking over the role instead – and photos exist showing him playing the banjo to confirm it.

Who else is in the cast?

In the upcoming film “Top Gun: Maverick,” Monica Barbaro will portray Joan Baez, while Elle Fanning will take on the role of Sylvie Russo, a fictionalized version of Dylan’s early ’60s love interest. Boyd Holbrook has been announced to embody Johnny Cash in this production, according to a recent interview with Rolling Stone. In addition, Deadline reported several other cast members including Scoot McNairy, Dan Fogler, Will Harrison, Charlie Tahan, P.J. Byrne, Eli Brown, Nick Pupo, Big Bill Morganfield, Laura Kariuki, Eric Berryman, David Alan Basche, Joe Tippett, and James Austin Johnson. No specific character details have been shared for these newcomers yet. Regrettably, Austin Butler remains unconfirmed for the project.

Is Timmy really singing live?

Currently, we possess evidence. On December 6th, Chalamet unveiled the initial pair of tracks from the soundtrack: covers of “The Girl From the North Country” (with a touch of vocal support from Barbaro) and the iconic “Like a Rolling Stone.” These are abridged adaptations of Dylan’s timeless hits. In these official soundtrack renditions (teasers of both can be seen in the film’s preview), Chalamet’s voice doesn’t quite echo Dylan’s signature gravelly vibrato (it’s hard for anyone to achieve that, isn’t it?), but Chalamet gives these songs a unique spin instead of aiming for spot-on replicas of the originals. You can hear both tracks below.

In an interview with Rolling Stone last July, Mangold verified that Chalamet and Barbaro performed live recordings as Dylan and Baez. However, he explained, “It’s not like if one of our actors missed a note, I have another take or the option to swap that single beat.” Instead, he said, “If Timmy has the courage to step out there and expose himself, I should have the courage to stand behind the camera and film.” Furthermore, several COVID-related production setbacks and false starts allowed Chalamet and Barbaro ample time to improve their musical skills. Mangold added, “Timmy was a collaborator in this. He truly wanted to participate.

What does Bobby D. think about the whole thing?

On December 4th, Dylan broke his silence regarding the upcoming film titled “A Complete Unknown”. He wrote, “There’s a movie coming out soon about me, and it’s called A Complete Unknown – quite an intriguing title, isn’t it?” It’s unclear whether this is an endorsement or criticism, but Dylan has not yet watched the film. Timothee Chalamet stars in the lead role, a role that Dylan believes Chalamet will excel in, playing either him, a younger version of him, or some other interpretation of him. Dylan also suggested reading Elijah Wald’s “Dylan Goes Electric” book, which serves as the basis for the film.

In response, Timmy expressed his astonishment and gratitude for Dylan’s compliment. To clarify, Club Chalamet promptly returned the favor by thanking Bob just as swiftly.

What’s the release date?

The release date for “A Complete Unknown” has been made clear; Mangold expedited the post-production process to ensure its screening on Christmas Day, specifically December 25th.
