PUBG Creator's Three-Game Plan Starts With A Survival Game With "Millions" Of Maps

As a seasoned gamer with decades of gaming experience under my belt, I have to admit that the news about PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) and its future projects has me genuinely excited! Having grown up playing the early battle royale mods on Arma 2, it’s fascinating to see how far the genre has come since then, with PUBG being a key player in that evolution.

Instead of being widely recognized as the peak of the battle royale genre, Fortnite, it was actually PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (developed by Brendan “PlayerUnknown” Greene) that initially gained mainstream popularity for this format. Following this success, Greene established his own studio, PlayerUnknown Productions, and they have now unveiled a three-game plan moving forward, with the first title being Prologue: Go Wayback.

In simpler terms, Prologue, set for release on Steam Early Access in Q2 2025, is a survival game where you play alone in an open world that’s filled with unexpected events. The team behind it has created innovative technology using machine learning to generate the game’s terrain. This tech can produce countless maps simultaneously, although the details of how it functions remain undisclosed for now.

The objective behind the three-game strategy is Project Artemis, however, details about Greene and his team’s plans for this project remain scant. Yet, in Greene’s own words, “My ambition for Artemis is daunting, but we aim to tackle it incrementally,” adding that these three games are designed to lay a robust technological foundation upon which we can expand further.

Alongside the Prologue and Project Artemis’s official launch, there’s also a tech demonstration called “Undiscovered World,” which presents Melba, PlayerUnknown Productions’ latest game engine in action. This demo serves as an extra addition to the main three-game plan. According to Greene, this demo will create a realistic “Earth-sized planet” in real time, allowing players to offer feedback as they traverse it. You can get your hands on “Undiscovered World” for free right now via Steam.

Regarding the past endeavor of Greene, PlayerUnknown’s Battleground can be played on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, personal computers, and mobile platforms.
