‘Alien: Romulus’ Star David Jonsson Boards British Short Film ‘If You’re Happy’ as Exec Producer (EXCLUSIVE)

As a seasoned movie critic with a penchant for British cinema, I find myself thoroughly intrigued by David Jonsson‘s latest venture as executive producer of “If You’re Happy.” Having grown up in the same town where this film is shot, I can appreciate the honesty and simplicity that Jonsson refers to. His rise to stardom in projects like “Alien: Romulus,” “Rye Lane,” and “Industry” has been nothing short of impressive, making him a key figure in today’s British film scene.

David Jonsson, the rapidly ascending British actor known for roles in “Alien: Romulus,” “Rye Lane,” and “Industry,” is now serving as an executive producer for Phoebe Arnstein’s upcoming short film titled “If You’re Happy.

Featuring Erin Doherty, formerly of “The Crown,” who will next appear in Disney+’s “A Thousand Blows,” the drama “If You’re Happy” centers around Lotte (Doherty), a woman grappling with the complexities and pressures of early motherhood. In search of camaraderie, she joins a peculiar baby group run by Jo Hartley. The strange atmosphere only intensifies Lotte’s feelings of displacement, leading her to express her frustration through a childish game. This unexpected action ignites an unforeseen, raw display of emotions among the other mothers.

Jonsson commented about the entirety of British cinema, stating that it was filmed in his hometown with an authentic, intricate simplicity. It’s a tale reflective of our current era,” said Jonsson, who has recently been identified as one of the 10 promising actors by EbMaster for 2024.

According to director Arnstein, “‘If You’re Happy’ emphasizes the significance of genuine human relationships during challenging times. I’m delighted that David understood the film’s appeal and agreed to serve as an executive producer.

In a recent turn of events, the Camerimage Golden Frog award recipient Michael Dymek (notable for “E.O.”, “A Real Pain”, “The Girl With the Needle”) takes on the role of cinematographer in the upcoming film “If You’re Happy.” The production team includes Sophia Gibber (“Wasteman”, “The Bike Thief”), Myles Payne (“Femme”, “Beast”), and Scarlett Barclay as producers. Salaud Morisset is overseeing international festival and commercial distribution, with David Staniland and James Sorton serving as executive producers in addition to this dynamic trio.

arnstein earned the young filmmaker’s prize for her documentary “We the Bathers,” and was also nominated for Vimeo’s ‘best of the year’. She was chosen for HBO’s mentorship program and worked alongside the main director on “Succession.” Currently, she is working on her first feature film with Film 4, which Gibber is producing.

Jonsson, who has upcoming projects like “The Long Walk” from Lionsgate, based on a Stephen King novel, and “Wasteman” by Cal Macdiarmid, is managed by Olivia Homan at United Agents, Zach Kaplan at CAA, and Granderson Des Rochers. Meanwhile, Arnstein is represented by Roxana Adle and Nick Hitchcock at Lark Management. Doherty, on the other hand, is handled by Kat Oliver at Conway van Gelder Grant, Sarah Fargo and Matthew Kaplan at Paradigm, and Elise Konialian at Untitled Entertainment.
