‘Spellbound’ Director Vicky Jenson Praises Netflix for Releasing Kids Movie Because Others ‘Were Nervous’ About Serious Family Storyline

As a film enthusiast with a soft spot for heartwarming stories and captivating animation, I am thrilled about the upcoming Netflix release of “Spellbound.” The film’s focus on open communication between parents and children resonates deeply with me, as I believe that such conversations are indeed vital in navigating life’s complexities.

Rachel Zegler lends enchantment to the latest Netflix movie “Spellbound”, voicing Princess Ellian – a 16-year-old royal who embarks on a determined quest to lift a spell that has metamorphosed her parents into beasts.

For me, the true essence of “Spellbound” transcends the realm of fantasy. At the New York premiere just recently, I shared with EbMaster at the Paris Theater how this film will encourage parents to engage in deeper conversations with their children.

During the production of “Dune: Part Two,” Javier Bardem recorded his lines for the character King Solon in Budapest, opposite Nicole Kidman as Queen Ellesmere. Despite not working together in the studio, Bardem expressed his wish to collaborate with Kidman again, calling her a wonderful partner and effortless to work alongside. According to Bardem, they were familiar with each other’s approaches, exchanging information about their performances, and trying to complement each other in the process.

Spellbound,” an inspiring story about resilience and transformation, marks the inaugural endeavor under Skydance’s multi-year collaboration with Netflix, indicating a significant change in the animation distribution sector. Led by Pixar veteran John Lasseter, Skydance has brought together prominent figures from the industry, such as Vicky Jenson (“Shrek”), who will direct “Spellbound.

Jenson expressed his admiration for Skydance, stating that everyone there is dedicated to crafting unique and captivating narratives, investing the necessary effort and resources to make them exceptional. He emphasized that they never take a ‘let it go’ approach.

For Skydance Animation, the future seems promising! In 2025, we’ll have Nathan Greno’s amusing body-swap comedy titled “Pookoo” hitting screens. Following closely in 2026 is Brad Bird’s hand-drawn feature film, “Ray Gunn”. As for a second “Spellbound” movie, it might be on the horizon as well! Jensen expressed his excitement about the potential sequel, saying, “That would be fantastic! I can’t help but ponder it, but we’ll have to wait and see if audiences embrace it.

“Spellbound” begins streaming on Netflix on November 22.
