Committing Fraud Is The Name Of The Game In SpreadCheat, A Love Letter To Excel

As a seasoned gamer with a soft spot for unique and quirky titles, I must say that SpreadCheat has caught my attention like no other throwback game in recent memory. With its retro Windows 3.11 aesthetic and a premise that invites financial tomfoolery, it’s a breath of fresh air in the gaming landscape.

There have been some unique throwback games over the years, but SpreadCheat looks like it’s going to be in a category all of its own. Games People Play and Rubarb are developing the upcoming puzzle title, which invites the player to use an Excel-like program to commit a little financial fraud in the name of hitting your company’s fiscal targets.

While Games People Play portrays SpreadCheat as emulating a Windows 3.11 ambiance, the visuals of the characters and backdrops appear more reminiscent of mid-’80s computer graphics. The player takes on the role of a freshly hired employee tasked with falsifying financial data, essentially cooking the books. In essence, gamers are required to construct and manipulate spreadsheet information to meet the company’s financial targets. Although such activities would be highly unlawful in reality, they are presented comically within the game. It remains uncertain whether the player can face consequences for their financial misconduct from law enforcement authorities within the game.

The game’s simulated Excel software incorporates a character similar to Clippy, Microsoft’s infamous virtual helper from Office applications, who often interrupted users when they forgot to disable him. It could be interesting if the game’s Clippy proved useful instead of annoying, providing a refreshing change.

GamesPeoplePlay has made available a demo for SpreadCheat on Steam, which you can add to your wishlist. This game is scheduled for a PC release during the first quarter of 2025.
