Firewatch-Inspired Game Two Falls Offers Players A Look At Indigenous History

As a gamer with a deep appreciation for stories that delve into historical narratives and cultural exploration, Two Falls (Nishu Takuatshina) has definitely piqued my interest. Having played games like Firewatch and What Remains of Edith Finch, I’m always on the lookout for more narrative-driven, atmospheric experiences that offer unique perspectives.

As we approach the final stages of the 2024 release schedule, there are still some games worth keeping an eye on, particularly those not receiving as much attention. One such game is Two Falls (Nishu Takuatshina), developed by Unreliable Narrators. This narrative-focused exploration game offers a unique twist by presenting a story from two different viewpoints, a rarity in the gaming world. It provides a fresh perspective on French and Indigenous first encounters, making it an intriguing choice for gamers.

As a passionate enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that on November 8, perfectly timed for Native American Heritage Month, I found myself immersed in the captivating world of Two Falls. This masterpiece is set against the backdrop of the untamed Canadian wilderness during the 17th century. The story revolves around Jeanne, a daughter of the French King who finds herself stranded from the colonies, and Maikan, an Innu hunter on a mission to unearth the source of trouble in his ancestral forest.

Despite the narrative being sequential, it presents numerous choices and actions that significantly affect both Jeanne and Maikan throughout their journey. A significant portion involves immersing oneself in 17th-century settings, complete with investigative scenes reminiscent of a detective’s work, as well as interactions with various characters along the way.

The creator, designer, and author of Two Falls, along with several actors and 3D artists, hail from diverse Native communities throughout Canada. This lends an authentic Indigenous viewpoint to the game. Currently, it can be played on PCs, but the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions are scheduled for release at a future date.
