Un Certain Regard Best Actress Winner Anasuya Sengupta Boards Gubbara Entertainment Slate Unveiled at India’s Film Bazaar (EXCLUSIVE)

As a seasoned film critic with a penchant for uncovering gems from around the globe, I find myself utterly captivated by the ambitious slate of projects unveiled by Gubbara Entertainment at this year’s Film Bazaar. The diversity and depth of these stories are truly a testament to the vibrant and evolving Indian cinema landscape.

Gubbara Entertainment, previously associated with Netflix and led by Dimpy Agrawal, has revealed a lineup of six films at India’s Film Bazaar. One of these projects features Anasuya Sengupta, who made Indian film history as the first actor to receive the ‘Best Performance’ award in Cannes’ Un Certain Regard category for her role in “The Shameless.

Sengupta will spearhead the film “Ma,” written by Riddhi Talreja, a graduate of Columbia University’s MFA program (known for “Sadak Chaap”). This thought-provoking production delves into women’s identity and motherhood in modern Indian society. Cinematographer Amal Sudhakaran, whose work has been showcased on Netflix, Amazon, and Discovery, is attached to this project. Notably, one of his works received Emmy consideration.

The lineup features “The Puthussery Police Case,” directed by Nithin Lukose, whose first film, “Paka: River of Blood,” made its debut at Toronto in 2021. This Kerala-based drama revolves around a lawyer unraveling the mystery of his father’s demise amidst the ominous presence of a tiger that poses a threat to a remote village.

titled “Ummeed,” an exploration of psychological horror, same-sex relationships, and fertility set in Delhi, hails from the pen of Abhishek Banerjee, who has previously written “Pari” and “Pataal Lok.” Ambiecka Pandit is currently in negotiations to direct this project.

Sushma Khadepaun, a participant at the Venice Film Festival, is presenting “Anita,” a feature film inspired by her award-winning short of the same title, which was screened at Venice in 2020. This India-U.S. collaboration narrates the story of a woman from India who seeks independence within the context of an arranged marriage in America.

Banerjee, alongside Rohit Ved Prakash and Kanchan Marathe, is also working on producing a film based on Puja Changoiwala’s book “Gangster on the Run”. This novel tells the story of an ex-criminal who transforms into an ultra-marathon runner.

Completing the lineup is “Red Market,” a production inspired by Scott Carney’s book about human trafficking and organ trading, being jointly produced by Criss Cross Content and Jugaad Motion Pictures.

At the Cannes Film Festival’s market earlier this year, Gubbara announced a $1 million fund for developing movie scripts, with the goal of supporting and strengthening Indian feature filmmakers.

Our work centers around creating narratives that provoke thought, touch hearts, and inspire significant change,” Agrawal explained. “We’re cultivating worldwide relationships through joint productions and impactful partnerships. By bridging cultural gaps and exploring artistic limits, we aim to revolutionize storytelling on a global level.

The first movie production by the company, titled “Chashma,” is making its rounds at various film festivals right now. Meanwhile, several other projects are being worked on during their initial stages of development.

The Market Segment takes place at the International Film Festival of India in Goa, from November 20th to the 24th. This event coincides with the main festival, which runs from November 20th to the 28th.
