Alec Baldwin’s ‘Rust’ Earns Polite Response at World Premiere as Halyna Hutchins Honored: The ‘People Who Made It’ Are ‘Heroic’

As a dedicated cinephile who has followed the tragic events surrounding “Rust” closely, I can’t help but feel a profound mix of emotions watching this film finally reach the screen. The accident that took the life of Halyna Hutchins was an unspeakable tragedy, and it’s heartening to see her colleagues honoring her memory in such a poignant manner.

Approximately three years following the unfortunate, accidental demise of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on set, my Western film “Rust” garnered a courteous reception amidst the buzzing controversy during its premiere at the EnergaCamerimage festival in Toruń, Poland.

During the closing moments of the film, the audience continued to clap, cheering even louder when a tribute to Hutchins was shown. Nevertheless, quite a few cinema-goers departed before the credits concluded and skipped a question-and-answer session with director Joel Souza – who had been injured during an October 2021 shooting incident on set in New Mexico – and cinematographer Bianca Cline, who completed the movie.

Alec Baldwin, both producer and actor involved in the incident involving a prop gun, was not extended an invitation to the festival, as stated by the event’s representative. Although Baldwin faced manslaughter charges, these were dropped due to the fact that the prosecution neglected to provide crucial evidence.

Hutchins’ mom, Olga Solovey (the one involved in the lawsuit against production and Baldwin), along with Matthew Hutchins, the cinematographer’s spouse who was appointed an executive producer on “Rust” under the settlement terms, were both absent from the event.

The event commenced by Marek Żydowicz, Camerimage’s director, inviting everyone to observe a brief moment of silence in honor of Hutchins. Following this, Rachel Mason, a cinematographer and close friend of Hutchins, delivered a heartfelt address after having created a documentary about the film’s completion.

She emphasized her deep conviction about clarifying misconceptions surrounding a profoundly misunderstood film and its creators, whom she regards as truly heroic individuals. Notably, this esteemed team chose to return to work following an unfortunate incident, driven by their unwavering devotion and affection for Hutchins.

She stated, “It was clear how much they’d suffered in the past, as if they had lived through a war. I wondered aloud, ‘Why subject yourself again to your deepest emotional turmoil?’ Yet, each person reacted similarly when informed that the film ‘Rust’ could aid Halyna’s family. What touched them was knowing she had a son who is now motherless. If they could help that boy in any way, then why wouldn’t they participate?

A stir arose when it was announced last month that “Rust” would be screened at Camerimage, leading to controversy. At the time, Żydowicz made a statement, part of which read, “The screening’s sole intention is to honor Halyna’s work, her talent, and her artistic accomplishments… Our goal is to uphold and fulfill Halyna’s and her family’s wishes. It was Halyna’s dream to showcase ‘Rust’ at EnergaCamerimage, and her family also wishes for this to take place.

As a film critic, I can’t help but ponder what Halyna herself might have desired regarding the culmination and debut of “Rust.” It’s a question that lingers, casting a somber shadow over this production.

She mentioned, “Here’s the thing though, I can’t question her. For the last three years, I’ve been trying to decipher: What drew her to this film? Was it something she adored? What was her role in it during those 12 days on the set of ‘Rust’?

Souza and Cline then took to the stage to deliver their own heartfelt remarks.

Cline expressed how awe-inspiring it is to witness people backing Halyna, following their collaborative project. He added that when one watches this movie now, they’ll be peering into the world through Halyna’s perspective. They’ll have an opportunity to grasp her vision of the world, and he hopes everyone carries that viewpoint in their hearts as they watch it today.

Souza expressed, “We find ourselves in a spot she cherished deeply, perhaps surpassed only by being on set. I want to express my gratitude to each of you for joining us and for spending a few hours out of your day to honor my friend and appreciate her artistry and skill. Truly, she was extraordinary.

Hutchins was a rising star in the film industry, with notable roles such as those in “Archenemy” (2020), “Blindfire” (2020), and “Darlin'” (2019). After her death, she received an honorary membership in the America Society of Cinematographers. Furthermore, AFI established the Halyna Hutchins Memorial Scholarship Fund.

The story “Rust” is about a 13-year-old boy who, having lost his parents in the 1880s Wyoming and left to take care of his younger brother, finds himself on the run with his long-lost grandfather. This is after he receives a death sentence for an unintentional killing of a local rancher, leading them both to flee.

Following the tragic demise of Hutchins, actor and producer Baldwin, who was in possession of the prop firearm during the unfortunate incident, faced charges for manslaughter. However, the case was dropped due to the failure of the prosecution to disclose crucial evidence.

After making that call, I, as a movie enthusiast, found myself following the news about “Rust” armorer Hannah Gutierrez Reed, who’s currently serving an 18-month sentence over Hutchins’ tragic death. In a recent turn of events, her legal team petitioned for a retrial, but unfortunately, the judge declined their plea and upheld the original verdict.
