As a fervent admirer of Taylor Tomlinson, I find her life experiences and comedic prowess truly inspiring. Her unique ability to weave humor into poignant social commentary is nothing short of captivating. In these tumultuous times, it’s refreshing to witness a woman who fearlessly navigates the complexities of politics and current events with such wit and grace.
On Wednesday evening, comedian Taylor Tomlinson’s monologue, as the sole woman in late-night comedy, was remarkably candid and sharp. As the host of CBS’ “After Midnight,” who introduced an opening monologue at the start of its second season, Tomlinson humorously commented with a touch of irony that it is a privilege to be on television given the ongoing struggle for women’s rights.
In the beginning, Tomlinson disclosed some strategies she used to deal with the aftermath of Donald Trump’s second term re-election, such as revisiting “Game of Thrones” episodes from around 2011 to help her remember happier times.
Back in the day of 2011, Joe Rogan wasn’t influencing election outcomes; instead, he was guiding folks on whether they’d dare to munch on insects for cash. Oh, those simpler times!
Tomlinson commented that Trump’s comeback is a clear indication of how problematic reboots can be, and she made this statement as the show host herself (hosting “After Midnight”, a revival of “Comedy Central’s @midnight”). Tomlinson remarked: “Why does he have to hold such a high position? Typically, when readjusting an ex-convict into society, one simply allows them to work at Baskin Robbins.
Here’s her full monologue:
Hello, I’m Taylor Tomlinson, glad you could join us for the show today. Let’s address the obvious – I hope it isn’t your birthday, as that would make this a less than ideal start to the day. Many people seem to be struggling today, feeling stunned and down, finding it hard to believe they have to go to work. Guess what? I’m right there with you. But let me express my gratitude for being on television during a time when women still can be. Enjoy the rest of your day!
Did everyone sleep well last night? It seems like you needed some pretty strong sleeping aids! I took a sleeping pill and ended up consuming an entire family-sized bag of jelly beans. Then, quite honestly, I found myself rewatching ‘Game of Thrones’ to help me relax. I thought maybe it would provide some perspective. Honestly, I was just trying to get back to 2011 – a time when Joe Rogan wasn’t influencing elections, but rather helping people decide if they’d eat bugs for money. Do you remember that?
I’ve been watching this Tiktok on a loop all morning.
Was that a bit too grim? It seemed as though the atmosphere yearned for a brighter moment. Honestly, it wasn’t amusing in the slightest. Everyone appeared to be wishing they were somewhere else, doing something else. There was no enjoyment derived from that situation by anyone here, including myself. Oh my goodness.
For today’s event, we had already made thorough preparations, anticipating that the election results wouldn’t be known by now. However, it seems we have the outcomes ahead of schedule. A second term for President Donald Trump. I must admit, as a host of a rebooted show myself, I find the excessive emphasis on reboot culture a bit overbearing.
What’s the reason for him becoming president? Typically, when reintroducing an ex-convict into society, one simply allows them to work at Baskin Robbins. I get it if that’s the role they’re assigned. But why this high position if you think about it?
I’m extremely frustrated and angry about several things. I’m upset with those who comforted me last week and assured me everything would be fine. I’m also angry with myself for trusting that this situation wouldn’t occur. Additionally, I’m irritated with CBS for hiring me, making it difficult for me to leave the country immediately. At the moment, my anger seems to be directed at the wrong places.
Wow, I know Anora was fantastic, right? Hang on, what’s that? Is this as intense or even more so than the cow video? What are your thoughts? I prefer to assume they aren’t oblivious. Instead, they might be seeking solace in movies, and indeed, I can relate. In fact, I’ll likely spend my weekend at AMC, shedding tears over the Nicole Kidman film. It resonates with us all: ‘we do need that, all of us.’
As numbers came pouring in and the Harris campaign seemed to be in a tough spot, it was evident that the news anchors were under pressure. Just as you might glance at flight attendants during turbulence to gauge their reaction – whether they appear worried or are calmly using their phones with a slight tremble – watching these news anchors was like looking into an abyss and seeing a sense of impending doom. To see how the situation was being portrayed on Fox News, I switched channels and saw nothing but celebrations with fireworks and passionate kisses.
Last night was a significant victory for the Republicans, as they also gained control of the Senate. Many media outlets are now questioning if a Republican-controlled Senate will restrain Trump, which is similar to asking the getaway driver of a robbery, ‘will you ensure they spend the money responsibly and wisely?’ It seems more like a rhetorical question, implying that the Senate may not effectively control Trump’s actions.
Many individuals are voicing their desires for solutions today, sharing ideas on how we can progress. I believe this discussion is beneficial. Yet, it’s crucial to pause for a moment and acknowledge our feelings. If a friend passes away, you attend the funeral and express your sorrow, saying ‘I truly miss my friend.’ You don’t go straight to volunteering at the library or suggesting solutions during the funeral, right? Similarly, let’s mourn the loss of democracy before we jump into immediate action. In essence, it’s essential to grieve first, then act.
Tomlinson was later joined by panelists Zach Noe Towers, Laura Peek and Guy Branum.
