As a seasoned cinema enthusiast with a keen interest in the behind-the-scenes workings of the industry, I find myself rather intrigued by this latest development involving Netflix. The news of tax fraud investigations in Paris and Amsterdam sends ripples of curiosity through the cinephile community.
On Tuesday, it was reported by Reuters and the French news agency AFP that investigators looking into tax fraud conducted searches at Netflix’s offices located in Paris and Amsterdam.
According to a French judicial authority, the recent raid is connected to an initial investigation concerning suspected tax evasion and money laundering. Similarly, searches were carried out yesterday at Netflix’s European headquarters in Amsterdam, as reported earlier by the French newspaper Marianne.
Based on Reuters reports, the probe into alleged financial irregularities is being led by France’s Financial Prosecutor’s Office (PNF), which was initiated in November 2022. According to AFP, the investigation centers around suspicions of concealing significant tax evasion and undeclared labor activities.
For several months now, collaboration between the French and Dutch officials has been happening in relation to this case, according to information provided to Reuters by a French source.
Netflix France and EMEA representatives didn’t provide a comment right away when approached by EbMaster.
In France, launching an initial inquiry doesn’t automatically imply that legal actions will follow or a court case will ensue. It is worth noting that technology firms providing global subscriptions may encounter issues with tax officials across Europe.
2022 saw Netflix resolving a tax disagreement with the Italian government by forking over €55.8 million ($59.1 million at the time). This dispute had been brewing since Italian investigators launched a probe three years prior, alleging that the streaming service should have paid taxes in Italy due to its reliance on local infrastructure to reach millions of users within the country. In May of that year, Netflix established an office in Rome.
