Cambodia’s Oscar Entry ‘Meeting With Pol Pot’ by Rithy Panh Lands North American Distribution (EXCLUSIVE)

As a long-time supporter of thought-provoking and historically significant cinema, I am absolutely thrilled about Strand Releasing’s acquisition of “Meeting With Pol Pot.” Having had the privilege to witness Rithy Panh’s previous works, I can confidently say that this film promises to be a powerful addition to his oeuvre.

Strand Releasing has purchased the distribution rights for “Meeting with Pol Pot,” a film by Rithy Panh, across North America. This movie made its debut at the Cannes Film Festival and is representing Cambodia in the global competition for best international feature film.

The movie, marketed by Playtime, narrates true incidents detailed in American war correspondent Elizabeth Becker’s book “When the War Was Over: Cambodia and The Khmer Rouge Revolution.” (Paraphrased)

The movie, featuring Irene Jacob as Becker, follows a perilous adventure taken by two reporters and a scholar, who venture into Democratic Kampuchea under Pol Pot’s rule following an invitation from the government. Joining them are Gregoire Colin and Cyril Guei in the supporting cast.

This partnership between Panh and Strand Releasing is now their fourth project together. They worked together on “The Missing Pictures” in 2013, which received an Oscar nomination, followed by “Exile” and “Irradiated,” both premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2020.

Recently, Panh took a trip to visit exhibitions of his movies at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Wexner Center for the Arts in Columbus, Ohio, and the BAM Pacific Film Archives in Berkeley, California.

Jon Gerrans from Strand Releasing expressed his excitement about collaborating once more with Playtime and Rithy on a significant movie. He was the one who arranged this agreement with Nicolas Brigaud-Robert from Playtime.

Rithy’s ongoing effort to record the terrible events that impacted his nation, as shown by the depiction of Elizabeth Becker’s harrowing encounter with Pol Pot, underscores the significance of what he’s doing – this is according to Gerrans. Strand intends to launch it in spring 2025.

Panh expressed that “Meeting With Pol Pot” serves not only as a portrayal of history, but also as a prompt for contemplation about our shared human nature. The filmmaker aims to provide a platform for the voiceless, those who have endured and been overlooked.

Brigaud-Robert stated, ‘Strand has been our collaborator on Rithy Panh’s projects for over ten years now.’ He emphasized that distributing Rithy’s films in the U.S. is more than just a business move; it’s an act of social awareness. Marcus Hu and Jon Gerrans are not only savvy entrepreneurs, but they also believe the film industry has a political obligation to retell history, to ensure that the horrors of terror and fascism do not recur anywhere in the world,’ Brigaud-Robert added.

As a cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that Strand Releasing’s latest offerings include “High Tide” by Marco Calvani, “All Shall Be Well” by Ray Yeung, and “Marcello Mio” from Christophe Honore. These films are part of their exciting lineup!
