As a seasoned movie critic with a penchant for Scandinavian noir and a soft spot for complex family dramas, I must admit that “My Brother” has piqued my interest. The fact that it’s based on Karin Smirnoff’s bestselling novel and hails from the same production house that brought us “The Bridge,” “Fallen,” and “Ronja the Robber’s Daughter” is already a promising start.
TrustNordisk, located in Copenhagen, has acquired international distribution rights for the four-part mystery thriller titled “My Brother,” produced by Filmlance International, a production company under Banijay Group that’s known for creating popular crime series like “The Bridge,” “Fallen,” and “Ronja the Robber’s Daughter.” The TV series will start filming in February 2025 in Norrbotten, Sweden’s northernmost county. The project is expected to be completed by winter 2025.
The story “My Brother” is marketed as a Northern Western, drawing inspiration from Karin Smirnoff’s first novel which is part of the Jana Kippo book series. This trilogy has been sold to multiple countries such as the U.K., Italy, and Germany. Additionally, Smirnoff has penned another popular work, “The Cry of the Sea Eagle,” set in the new Millennium.
Film company FilmLance’s latest venture in the crime genre is being penned by established screenwriter Karin Arrhenius (“Blackwater”, “Rebecca Martinsson: Arctic Murders”), with Sanna Lenken (“Thin Blue Line”, “Pressure Point”) at the helm as director.
The narrative centers around Jana Kipps, who goes back to the make-believe town of Smalånger to help her troubled twin brother. Along the way, she develops feelings for a man believed to have murdered his wife, Maria – the woman who was her brother’s beloved. As Jana becomes entangled in the enigma surrounding Maria’s demise, she is compelled to deal with suppressed memories from her past upbringing.
Actress Amanda Jansson, known from ‘Thin Blue Line’, will be taking on a starring role alongside Jakob Öhrman (famous for ‘Helsinki Syndrome’ and ‘Rebecka Martinsson: Arctic Murders’) and Rasmus Johansson in the upcoming project.
Regarding the show and the possibility of guiding Jansson, Öhrman, and Johansson, Lenken expressed: “I’m incredibly thankful for the opportunity to collaborate with this trio. Each one of these actors demonstrated exceptional bravery during their initial filming by courageously revealing themselves and fully committing. Our aim is to delve into Smirnoff’s characters, striving to depict vulnerability, strength, and boundlessness – essentially, the universally human qualities.
This television series is created by Anna Wallmark from Filmlance, in collaboration with SVT and Filmpool Nord. The series is being marketed by TrustNordisk at Mipcom, alongside the Danish crime drama “Off the Record” and the Norwegian thriller “The Fortress,” which was awarded best screenplay at Series Mania last year and recommended by The New York Times as one of the 30 must-watch shows for summer 2024. Additionally, it’s being promoted alongside several other high-quality productions.
