‘The Physician II’ Starring Tom Payne, Emily Cox, Aiden Gillen and Liam Cunningham Debuts First Look, Beta Cinema to Launch Sales at AFM

As a dedicated fan of historical epics, it is with great excitement that I eagerly await the release of “The Physician II”. Having grown up watching the original film and being captivated by its intricate storyline and stunning visuals, I am thrilled to see the return of Rob Cole, played by Tom Payne, in this long-awaited sequel.

Four production companies – Beta Cinema, Constantin Film, Zeitsprung Pictures, and UFA Fiction – have shared a sneak peek image for “The Physician II,” the upcoming installment in the popular historical saga.

The movie first shown in 2013 was a massive success worldwide, raking in profits from more than 60 different countries. In Germany specifically, it grossed an impressive $42 million at the box office and attracted 3.6 million viewers.

In his latest project, “The Physician” director Philipp Stölzl skillfully assembles a talented group consisting of both established international stars and promising newcomers. Tom Payne, known for roles in “Horizon: An American Saga,” “The Walking Dead,” and “Prodigal Son,” returns to portray the passionate physician Rob Cole. Joining him on screen are Emily Cox (“The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Die”), Aidan Gillen (“Game of Thrones,” “Maze Runner”), Áine Rose Daly (“Boiling Point,” “Hanna”), Owen Teale (“Robin Hood,” “Game of Thrones”), and Liam Cunningham (“Game of Thrones,” “Hunger”).

The filming occurred between August and October of 2024 in Hungary, Cologne, and Berlin. Constantin Film will debut the movie in German theaters on Christmas Day, 25th December 2025. Beta Cinema is managing international distribution, showcasing initial materials at the upcoming American Film Market.

The tale unfolds in the 11th century: Having escaped from Isfahan, the physician Rob Cole along with his associates, find themselves back in his familiar surroundings of London. Their objective is to share their superior medical wisdom. However, Rob is quickly entangled in the complexities of the royal court and finds himself compelled to engage in combat again – this time for the wellbeing of his patients, for acknowledgment of his accomplishments, and against a formidable adversary: the torment of the human spirit.

Reflecting on “The Physician” after a decade, Stölzl expressed that returning to the project has been both delightful and intense for him, given his role as director. It was like stepping into a comforting embrace from old characters and themes, yet at the same time, it was fascinating to observe how his perspective on this world has evolved since growing as an artist over the past years.

Producer Wolf Bauer declared, ‘A long-held dream has finally become a reality.’ The narrative of ‘The Physician’ – encompassing the pursuit of knowledge and wisdom – continues in ‘The Physician II’. This film promises another grand cinematic experience as we rejoin our protagonist Rob Cole on his thrilling voyage back to medieval London, delving into the complexities of the human psyche. Bigoted attitudes, superstitions, hostility towards foreigners, and dark machinations at the royal court pose significant challenges for him. 10 years after playing a role, Payne finds himself in a rare and esteemed position – revisiting a cherished character that millions adore. He’s looking forward to embarking on a fresh adventure with this character, delving into profound and relatable themes within an enthralling and captivating tale. The actor expresses his eagerness for audiences to return to the world of Rob Cole and immerse themselves in a timeless cinematic experience once more.

The movie titled ‘The Physician II’ is jointly produced by Wolf Bauer and Philipp Stölzl, with Till Derenbach and Michael Souvignier from Zeitsprung Pictures, as well as Bauer and Sebastian Werninger from UFA Fiction. Constantin Film and Beta are also involved in the co-production.

Once more, “The Physician II” is under Stölzl’s direction, inspired by a narrative jointly crafted by Jan Berger and himself. Amazon Prime Video and ZDF play significant roles in its financing, while it also receives backing from the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW, Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg (MBB), the German Federal Film Fund (DFFF) and the German Federal Film Board (FFA).
