As a long-time gamer with memories of late nights spent conquering levels and battling opponents in various virtual worlds, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement and anticipation as I reflect on the one-year anniversary of Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard. This deal has been nothing short of game-changing for the gaming industry, and I, for one, am eager to see what the future holds!
A full year has passed since Microsoft officially took over Activision Blizzard, and the landscape has certainly shifted in that time. The acquisition encountered several obstacles along the way, but ultimately it was successful. Some players were skeptical about this groundbreaking decision, while others eagerly awaited the possibility of their beloved games joining the Game Pass library. Now, a year later, we can examine the games that have been added and those yet to come. Before we delve into that, let’s first rewind and learn about the background of this acquisition.
Acquistion of Activision Blizzard by Microsoft
On January 18, 2022, Microsoft declared its plans to purchase Activision Blizzard for approximately $69 billion. Following scrutiny and examinations from multiple organizations, including the Federal Trade Commission, the transaction was eventually finalized on October 13, 2023. As a result of this acquisition, Microsoft now ranks as the third-largest gaming company globally, just behind Tencent and Sony. This deal also marked the most costly video game-related purchase ever made, with the final price tag reaching $75.4 billion.
According to the deal, Microsoft now owns popular franchises like Call of Duty, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Warcraft, StarCraft, Diablo, Overwatch, and Candy Crush. Some of these games are already accessible on Game Pass, while others are yet to be added, with no confirmation from Microsoft as of now. To commemorate the first anniversary of the acquisition, we’ve prepared two lists: one showcases Activision Blizzard games that are currently available on Game Pass, and the other suggests potential additions to Game Pass in the future.
