This Horror Game Plays Like The World's Scariest Game Show, And It's Out Today

As someone who has spent countless hours navigating through dark and terrifying labyrinths in various horror games, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement upon hearing about 7 Minutes in Hell. The game’s premise of descending into a monster-infested maze, collecting loot, and escaping before the timer runs out seems like a thrilling blend of survival horror and competitive game show elements – a twist on Lethal Company that I find intriguing.

In October, which is known for its spooky vibe, we find horror games particularly appealing. Our October Horror Games compilation supports this. Today, we’re expanding our list with another chilling addition: 7 Minutes in Hell. This game comes from Gaggle Studios, the creators of Goose Goose Duck, a game similar to Among Us. Unlike its predecessor, 7 Minutes in Hell draws inspiration from a familiar source but offers an unexpected twist; it’s as if Lethal Company was transformed into a twisted game show.

7 Minutes in Hell invites gamers to plunge into dark, monster-filled mazes, gather as much loot as possible, and escape before the clock runs out. For some players, it might be reminiscent of Supermarket Sweep, but with dimmer lighting and fewer promotions for laundry products.

The game can be played individually or cooperatively, and it places a significant focus on social aspects, such as choosing to abandon the group and flee with your own earnings, potentially leaving others behind in the literal dark. Each playthrough lasts only seven minutes, and the levels become progressively harder as time goes by.

In the game ‘Lethal Company’, you can use your winnings from each round to purchase useful items such as flashlights. This should boost not only your chances of surviving, but also help you prosper in the upcoming rounds.

As a player, I find an intriguing twist in this game: it appears to satirically comment on the dynamics of power and wealth through its in-game “sponsors” granting extra advantages. This reminds me of Lethal Company’s portrayal of workplace hierarchy or even more so, the way Squid Game exposes the relentless pursuit of wealth within a system that seems designed for ordinary people to fail.

7 Minutes in Hell officially releases on Steam today, October 7th, initially available as an early access title with a planned development roadmap unveiled. Throughout this year, expect new challenges and items to be added progressively via various updates, along with a fresh arena scheduled for December. Future updates, extending into 2025, will incorporate mod support, more items, and monsters.
