As a film enthusiast who has spent countless hours engrossed in the silver screen, I must say that the acquisition of “The Penguin Lessons” by Sony Pictures Classics is undeniably an exciting development. Having seen a plethora of films featuring Steve Coogan over the years, from his heartwarming performance in “Philomena” to the quirky humor of “Alan Partridge,” I eagerly anticipate his portrayal of a cynical British professor bonding with an oil-soaked penguin.
Sony Pictures Classics has secured “The Penguin Lessons,” a heartwarming comedy-drama featuring Steve Coogan, who develops an extraordinary friendship with an unusual avian companion while serving as a teacher.
Peter Cattaneo is the one behind the helm of this year’s Toronto Film Festival premiere. The movie is based on Jeff Pope’s adaptation of Tom Michell’s 2016 memoir. The story revolves around a British professor with a jaded outlook, who moves to Argentina in the tumultuous ’70s and undergoes a life-changing experience when he saves an oil-drenched penguin from a beach. In terms of distribution, Sony Pictures Classics holds the rights for North America, the Middle East, Turkey, Asia, India, Japan, and South Korea.
In “The Penguin Lessons,” an English actor famed for his roles in “Philomena” and “Alan Partridge,” who is set to appear in the upcoming “Joker: Folie a Deux,” shared the screen with a genuine, living bird.
He mentioned before the TIFF premiere that, luckily, he’s had plenty of experience with improvisation in his career. This means he doesn’t panic when animals don’t follow the script as expected. Instead, he embraces the unexpected situation, rather than trying to resist it. He believes these spontaneous moments can result in some of the most memorable scenes.
However, he added, ““We had to kick against the cuteness at all times.”
Beyond Coogan, the ensemble features Jonathan Pryce, Vivian El Jaber, Björn Gustafsson, and Alfonsina Carrocio. The movie was jointly produced by Ben Pugh of 42 and Rory Aitken, with funding provided by Intake Films, Rolling Dice, and Aperture Media Partners. Additionally, Adrián Guerra and Andy Noble from Nostromo, as well as Robert Walak, were involved in production. Joshua Horsfield and Nia Vazirani of Intake Films, along with Josh Varney, Tom Michell, Pope, and Coogan, served as executive producers for Rolling Dice.
Meanwhile, on various film festival platforms, Sony Pictures Classics has acquired three films: “Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight,” a cinematic adaptation of Alexandra Fuller’s memoir detailing her upbringing during the Rhodesian civil war; “The Room Next Door,” directed by Pedro Almodóvar and featuring Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton; and “The Outrun,” starring Saoirse Ronan in a drama. “The Room Next Door” was awarded the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, making it a significant contender for upcoming Oscars.
Cattaneo expressed his joy in collaborating with Sony Pictures Classics on ‘The Penguin Lessons.’ The response from the audience during TIFF was exhilarating, and he’s eager to carry on this adventure with the guidance and knowledge that SPC brings to the film.
In a statement, Sony Pictures Classics noted that ‘The Penguin Lessons’ is based on real-life events but has an eternal appeal. It offers a captivating and emotionally powerful experience, and it’s certain to strike a chord with viewers worldwide.
The movie ‘The Penguin Lessons’ brings Sony Pictures Classics together with Pope and Coogan again, following their partnership on the 2018 biographical film ‘Stan & Ollie,’ focusing on Laurel and Hardy. Previously, Coogan was in Sony’s dark comedy ‘Greed,’ released in 2019.
In the case of “The Penguin Lessons”, negotiations were carried out between Sony Pictures Classics and CAA Media Finance, acting on behalf of the producers. The global distribution rights belong to Rocket Science, while Lionsgate is responsible for the film’s release in the United Kingdom.
