‘Rugrats’ Live-Action Movie in the Works at Paramount With CGI Babies

As a film enthusiast who grew up in the ’90s and was captivated by the adventures of Tommy Pickles and his friends, I must say I am genuinely thrilled about the upcoming live-action/CG hybrid feature film of “Rugrats.” Having witnessed the evolution of this beloved show from television to cinema, it’s fascinating to see how it continues to reinvent itself.

The classic ’90s cartoon series “Rugrats” is making its comeback on the big screen! Paramount is currently working on a live-action and computer-generated imagery (CGI) blend movie, inspired by the beloved kids’ TV show from back then.

In the upcoming movie, characters Tommy Pickles, Chuckie Finster, Phil DeVille, and Lil DeVille (Tommy’s pals) are going to be animated, much like in “Sonic the Hedgehog.” It remains uncertain which other characters from the original series will make an appearance. This group is associated with Angelica Pickles, a bully, her doll Cynthia who’s quite the dancer, Tommy’s younger brother Dil Pickles, their dog Spike, parents Didi and Stu Pickles, Chas Finster, Drew and Charlotte Pickles, as well as Betty and Howard DeVille.

Jason Moore, known for his work on “Pitch Perfect” and the comedy “Sisters” starring Tina Fey and Amy Poeheler, is serving as the director for this upcoming movie. The screenplay was written by Saturday Night Live actor Mikey Day and head writer Streeter Seidell. Karen Rosenfelt is producing, along with Arlene Klasky and Gábor Csupó, who are best recognized for creating “Rugrats.

Back in 1991, I found myself captivated by the vibrant world of “Rugrats” on Nickelodeon. Over the years, this beloved series spawned numerous blockbuster films like “The Rugrats Movie” (1998), “Rugrats in Paris” (2000), and “Rugrats Go Wild” (2003), which had a thrilling crossover with “The Wild Thornberrys” TV show. Fast forward to later years, we witnessed the spin-off series “All Grown Up!” and more recently, a fresh reboot hit Paramount+ in 2021.

Most recently, Moore has been in charge of directing “Shotgun Wedding,” a romantic comedy featuring Jennifer Lopez and Josh Duhamel, for Amazon Prime Video. He also plans to take on the roles of director for film adaptations based on Steven Rowley’s novel “Guncle” and Emma Straub’s book “This Time Tomorrow.” Beyond his work in film, Moore boasts a rich background in Broadway productions, including “Avenue Q,” “Shrek the Musical,” and “The Cher Show.

Deadline Hollywood first reported the news of the new “Rugrats” movie.
