In Duskmourn: House of Horror, it’s understandable that the priciest cards are the premium, foil-treated special treatment ones. Notably, these high-end cards primarily consist of the Enduring series and the Overlords from the set, with many being the Japanese Showcase editions of the cards within the collection. However, we understand this might not be what newcomers opening play booster packs are looking for, so we’ve included the costs of their standard versions as well, for comparison purposes.
This collection is quite captivating, serving as a stark reminder that the 80s are now four decades past and that numerous allusions to ’80s culture might seem fresh and intriguing to many younger Magic: The Gathering enthusiasts today. It’s hard not to feel a bit nostalgic, right? However, this set effectively captures the intended atmosphere, making us believe it’s another success story for Wizards of the Coast.

1. Overlord of the Hauntwoods (Japan Showcase, Fracture Foil) – $205.23
As an avid Magic: The Gathering enthusiast, I was instantly captivated by the Hauntwoods Overlord upon its unveiling, primarily due to its unique ability to generate a land token encompassing all basic types simultaneously. This trait seamlessly complements Domain cards, making it a valuable asset for multicolored deck strategies. Despite the card’s somewhat steep cost, its utility is undeniable.
In simpler terms, everywhere isn’t a mythical place, meaning you can have multiple of them in play, provided the Ruler of the Forests (Overlord) is present or engaged. Additionally, the Overlord itself isn’t legendary, so you can control numerous ones at once. This card exerts significant pressure on your opponent, making it highly desirable both for its potential value and raw power.
The regular version of the Overlord of the Hauntwoods is priced at $18.55.
2. Valgavoth, Terror Eater (Showcase, Textured Foil) – $180.07
Among all the cards in the expansion, our second most costly is Valgavoth, the Fearsome Devourer. This card’s text box is quite verbose and it boasts an intimidating 9/9 power and defense. It possesses the abilities of flying and lifelink, and has a Ward that compels opponents to sacrifice three non-land permanents if they aim direct attack spells at it. Additionally, it carries graveyard-related effects that enable you to utilize opponent’s exiled cards using your life total as a resource. Given Valgavoth’s lifelink ability, this shouldn’t be much of an issue.
Valgavoth is an extraordinary creature, distinct from its Overlords, as only a single instance may appear at a time on the battlefield. Having multiple instances would be unpleasant for both players; however, just one can significantly impact your opponent’s gameplay. Could this card find a place in EDH (Commander)? Perhaps it might be too costly to employ regularly, but its potential remains to be seen.
The regular version of Valgavoth, Terror Eater is priced at $22.15.
3. Enduring Tenacity (Japan Showcase, Fracture Foil) – $174.26
The initial Everlasting card on our list has a high potential for misuse, much like the other cards in this series. The Everlasting Tenacity, upon being eliminated, resurrects as an enchantment, necessitating your opponent to eliminate or exile it twice to eliminate its ongoing effects. Its passive effect is a simple life drain, which may appeal to certain players who value such mechanics. This card stands out as the costliest among the Everlasting cycle primarily due to its art and the captivating way it appears in Fracture Foil version.
Enduring Tenacity’s regular version is priced at only $2.37.
4. Enduring Vitality (Japan Showcase, Fracture Foil) – $156.61
Similar to Enduring Tenacity, Vitality re-enters the battlefield when destroyed for the first time. It boasts Vigilance, making it an appealing choice at a 3 mana cost. Furthermore, it transforms your creatures into ramp resources, which could make it a popular pick among players and potentially one of the most frequently used Enduring cards in the set.
Enduring Vitality’s regular version is priced at $2.60.
5. Enduring Courage (Japan Showcase, Fracture Foil) – $150.99
In simpler terms, among all cycles, Enduring Courage stands out as particularly potent in limited gameplay. It grants haste and +2/0 to every creature on your battlefield, which can lead to swift attacks against your opponent if utilized effectively, essentially setting the stage for a rapid assault strategy.
Out of all the Enduring cards, it’s noteworthy that this one is both a part of the red deck win condition and the most affordable among standard editions, priced at just $0.70.
6. Overlord of the Mistmoors (Japan Showcase, Fracture Foil) – $150.12
In our roster, the second Overlord is the one that lingers in the Mistmoors. This Enchantment Creature shares Impending with all other Overlords. Unlike the others, this Overlord of the Mistmoors specializes in swarming the battlefield with 2/1 white Insects, creating two each time it attacks or comes into play. Interestingly, this Overlord may find an advantage in not materializing as a creature among the Overlords, as it becomes immune to creature-targeted board wipes while still in its Impending state.
The regular version of the Overlord of the Mistmoors cost $6.26.
7. Enduring Curiosity (Japan Showcase, Fracture Foil) – $145.13
The only Enduring card with Flash is Enduring Curiosity. Casted for 2UU, Enduring Curiosity allows players to draw a card each time a creature they control deals combat damage to a player. This gives a lot of value, with a 4/3 body that can even be used for blocking when the situation is dire.
In the Booster Box Game, the Professor can’t include Enduring Curiosity’s standard version in his tally because it retails at just $1.93.
8. Overlord of the Balemurk (Japan Showcase, Fracture Foil) – $133.02
As a gamer, I’ve found the Overlord of Balemurk isn’t exactly the thrill-seeker among its peers. Its ability to retrieve creatures or Planeswalkers from the graveyard back into your deck is intriguing, but it lacks the self-reliance that would make it truly exciting. It’d be a game-changer if it could fish for itself, but alas, it’s only permitted for non-Avatar creatures. This restriction significantly curtails its usefulness, though perhaps that’s for the best. It does boast the lowest Impending cost, but it enters the battlefield at a snail’s pace, with five time counters stacked against it.
The regular version of Overlord of Balemurk sells for $7.35.
9. Enduring Innocence (Japan Showcase, Fracture Foil) – $127.23
At the tail end of our list comes Enduring Innocence. It features Lifelink with a 2/1 body and can be cast for 1 White-White mana. It complements its Overlord counterpart nicely, though not perfectly as its effect only triggers once. This card is beneficial in decks that focus on multiple creatures because it lessens the harm inflicted by effects that eliminate all creatures. It facilitates rapid reconstruction if you predominantly use small creatures, but keep in mind that this may not always be the optimal approach.
Enduring Innocence’s regular version only sells for $2.33.
10. Overlord of the Floodpits (Japan Showcase, Fracture Foil) – $122.21
The final card on our list of the most expensive Duskmourn cards is the Overlord of the Floodpits, a flying 5/3 that lets you loot your deck every time it enters or attacks. Among all of the Overlords, we might see the most consistency out of this card, even if its effect isn’t as exciting as the others. The ability to loot every time you attack with a Flying 5/3 is understated, and we’re sure that this will find a lot of homes in different decks.
The regular version of the Overlord of the Floodpits sells for $3.26.
Just to complete the cycle, the Japan Showcase Fracture Foil version of the fifth Overlord, the Overlord of the Boilerbilges sells for $95.09, with its regular version selling for $3.40. Even if it doesn’t make this list of the most expensive Duskmourn cards in the set, it still fetches a respectable value.
