Box Office: ‘The Wild Robot’ Powering Up to $35 Million Opening, ‘Megalopolis’ on Track for Less Than $5 Million

As a seasoned film critic with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that this week’s box office is nothing short of intriguing! The Wild Robot, directed by Chris Sanders, has proven to be quite the surprise hit, outperforming initial projections and leaving me in awe. Lupita Nyong’o’s voice performance as Roz, the adorable robot, is truly captivating, and I can’t help but root for her as she navigates an unfamiliar planet teeming with wildlife.

The latest collaboration between Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Animation, “The Wild Robot,” has powered on to an impressive $34 million debut during its opening weekend.

Chris Sanders’ animated film, initially predicted to earn between $24 million and $30 million during its debut weekend, actually started off with $11.3 million on Friday, potentially dethroning “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” from Warner Bros., which has been the box office leader for three consecutive weeks. With an estimated $16 million expected in its fourth week of release, Burton’s horror comedy “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” may secure the second spot on the charts.

The long-awaited release of Francis Ford Coppola’s movie “Megalopolis” is happening this weekend, following its summer premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. Despite initial expectations of earning between $5 million and $7 million during its opening weekend, it seems that the film may only make around $4.6 million. To date, it has made $1.84 million across 1,854 North American cinemas. With a production budget of $120 million, primarily self-funded by Coppola, Lionsgate is handling its distribution and marketing in return for a fee. Interestingly, “Megalopolis” will debut at the box office in fifth place, trailing behind the Indian Telugu-language action film “Devara: Part 1,” which is projected to bring in an impressive $6.7 million during its opening weekend.

In the second week of its release, Paramount’s “Transformers One,” featuring Chris Hemsworth as a youthful Optimus Prime and Brian Tyree Henry as a young Megatron, has slipped from the number one spot to the third position at the box office. The film is projected to earn around $9.3 million in its second weekend.

This week, Sony’s original movie about the origins of “SNL,” titled “Saturday Night,” premiered in five theaters located in New York and Los Angeles. In two weeks, it will be released nationwide. The film is projected to earn $255,000 overall, and made $107,000 on Friday alone. Jason Reitman’s movie is expected to average approximately $51,000 per theater this weekend.

“The Wild Robot” presents Lupita Nyong’o as the charming robot character, Roz. Stranded on an unfamiliar planet brimming with diverse wildlife, Roz finds herself in a struggle to adjust to her novel surroundings. Throughout her journey, she encounters various animals lent their voices by Pedro Pascal, Kit Conner, Catherine O’Hara, Bill Nighy, Mark Hamill, Ving Rhames, and Stephanie Hsu.

In the movie “Megalopolis,” Adam Driver takes on the role of the head of a vast city called New Rome, who is tasked with restoring a futuristic metropolis. The ensemble features Giancarlo Esposito, Nathalie Emmanuel, Aubrey Plaza, Shia LaBeouf, Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, Talia Shire, Jason Schwartzman, Kathryn Hunter, Grace VanderWaal, Chloe Fineman, and Dustin Hoffman.
