As a long-time fan of Hideo Kojima‘s groundbreaking work, I am utterly thrilled by the latest announcement of his new project, OD. The man behind some of the most innovative and daring games in the industry is partnering with the brilliant mind of Oscar-winning filmmaker Jordan Peele, and this collaboration promises to be nothing short of revolutionary.
Beyond the PlayStation-exclusive title Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, Hideo Kojima’s Kojima Productions is also working on OD, an exclusive for Xbox. In a recent interview, the renowned game designer hinted at some risk associated with OD, describing it as “daring” or “venturesome.
He shared with Variety that he was keen on developing a game separate from the Death Stranding series, so he teamed up with Microsoft for OD. “It’s a game, but unlike anything you’ve ever seen,” he stated. “I can’t reveal too much, and it’s quite difficult to describe,” he added. “But it’s somewhat daring and presents a fresh challenge for me in the world of gaming.
Kojima has collaborated with Academy Award-winning director Jordan Peele on a project named OD. Following a discussion with Peele in LA, Kojima presented his idea for OD and invited Peele to be part of it.
“He was really interested in it, so I asked him to join me,” Kojima said.
Kojima boasts a wide circle of renowned filmmakers such as Peele, Nicolas Winding Refn, Guillermo del Toro, and more. He shared that some of these movie-making acquaintances are eager to venture into video games but lack knowledge on how, which is how his collaboration with Peele was initiated.
In the world of films and music, individuals seem to have a soft spot for video games, which is something I found fascinating. Despite being involved in creating movies or music, these people are secret gamers. I’ve even encountered instances where people were late to set because they were engrossed in their gaming at home, as shared by Kojima.
He commented: “Here’s what I suggest to those individuals: ‘Then you should create games!’ However, they all respond by saying, ‘I’d love to, but I don’t know the way.’ They claim it’s impossible for them. This led me to think, why not work together on a project? And that’s how I ended up collaborating with Jordan Peele on creating a game.
Upon the announcement of OD, Peele expressed that it’s unlike any other game out there, promising an extraordinary and wild experience. Actors such as Hunter Schafer, Sophia Lillis, and Udo Kier will deliver their performances in this unique game.
Kojima Productions is utilizing Microsoft’s cloud gaming tech for a unique, “immersive” game, which Kojima describes as being more like a movie than a traditional game. This was conveyed via a translator.
In simpler terms, the official description for OD implies that it’s a game created by Hideo Kojima, where you are challenged to push the limits of your fear tolerance. The game also questions the idea of overdosing on fear. It further blends the lines between video games and movies.
Besides working on Death Stranding 2 and another project named OD, Kojima Productions is also developing a spy-themed game titled Physint. Separate from their gaming endeavors, Hideo Kojima is currently producing a Death Stranding movie in collaboration with A24.
Kojima is set to share more details about Death Stranding 2 during the Tokyo Game Show this coming weekend, specifically on Saturday, September 29th. Be sure to stay tuned to TopMob for further updates.
