India’s Yash Chopra Foundation Launches Scholarship for Children of Film Industry Workers (EXCLUSIVE)

As a lifelong cinephile who has spent countless hours immersed in the magical world of Indian cinema, I can’t help but feel a profound sense of admiration and gratitude towards the visionaries like Yash Chopra, whose unwavering passion for storytelling has not only entertained generations but also shaped the landscape of our beloved industry.

On Friday, the charitable wing of prominent Indian film production company Yash Raj Films, known as The Yash Chopra Foundation, announced a fresh scholarship initiative. This launch took place on the occasion of the founder’s 92nd birthday, Yash Chopra himself.

This initiative is designed to help economically disadvantaged children whose parents work in the Hindi film industry and are part of the Federation of Western India Cine Employees. The program provides financial aid, up to INR500,000 ($5,975) per student, for undergraduate and postgraduate studies in various fields such as mass communication, filmmaking, production, direction, visual arts, cinematography, and animation.

Yash Chopra, who passed away in 2012, was a trailblazer in the Indian film industry. Recognized for both his hard-hitting movies and romantic dramas, Chopra directed numerous critically praised and financially successful films throughout his five-decade career. His film “Waqt” is credited with popularizing the multi-starrer in Hindi cinema, while his grittier works include timeless classics like “Deewar” and “Kaala Patthar.” Due to his romantic films such as “Silsila,” “Lamhe,” “Kabhi Kabhie,” “Veer-Zaara,” “Dil To Pagal Hai,” “Chandni,” and “Jab Tak Hai Jaan,” Chopra is often referred to as the founder of romance in Indian cinema. He established Yash Raj Films in 1970, which eventually grew into one of India’s biggest film production companies.

Akshaye Widhani, head of YRF, stated: “Our founder and renowned filmmaker, Yash Chopra, was dedicated to supporting the Hindi film industry in any capacity. His values are deeply rooted within our company’s ethos. As we celebrate what would have been his 92nd birthday, we are thrilled to embark on a journey aimed at empowering children from the Hindi film community.

The interview stage of the selection process will be tailored to each candidate, as Widhani explained that this initiative aims to motivate and equip promising students with the skills needed to pursue their aspirations within the film industry.
