Looking Back At Derrick Rose in Every NBA 2K Game

As a sports enthusiast who has followed Derrick Rose‘s illustrious career, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia and admiration for this remarkable athlete. His journey from the University of Memphis to the Chicago Bulls, where he was named the NBA’s Most Valuable Player in his second season, is truly inspiring.

Instead of examining Derrick Rose’s rating in every NBA 2K game since his draft, let’s reminisce about his ratings throughout the series as he recently announced his retirement. A once-in-a-generation player, Rose’s career was cut short by injuries. Over a span of 16 seasons in the NBA, he amassed numerous accolades and even claimed the MVP title in 2011. Managing Rose in NBA 2K was equally thrilling since he briefly stood among the game’s top players. Consequently, we thought it would be interesting to review every NBA 2K game Rose featured in, starting from his draft in 2008.

Derrick Rose’s NBA 2K History

NBA 2K9 – 2008 (PS2, PS3, Xbox 360 Windows – 2008)

Derrick Rose’s first-ever appearance in an NBA 2K game is NBA 2K9, released in 2008.

2008 NBA Draft’s top choice was anticipated to perform impressively during his debut season, and he exceeded those expectations remarkably by clinching the Rookie of the Year title after participating in 80 matches. Despite being a novice, Rose displayed maturity beyond his years, averaging approximately 17 points per game while maintaining a field goal percentage of 47.5.

Initially, when NBA 2K9 was launched, Derrick Rose’s overall rating was 80. This placed him only four points below the highest-rated rookie, Victor Wembanyama. Managing a team in 2K9 would be quite exciting, given that you’d have a young Derrick Rose to play with for several seasons.

NBA 2K10 – 2009 (PS2, PS3, Xbox 360, PSP, Windows, Wii)

In NBA 2K10, Derrick Rose began the season with an overall rating of 80 for the second year running. Statistically, Rose’s performance was remarkably similar to his rookie year. He scored more points per game, boasted a better field goal and three-point shooting percentage, and played in 78 games as a starter. Similar to his rookie season, the Bulls team reached the first round of the playoffs but were eliminated this time in five games instead of seven.

Therefore, Rose remained an 80, but better days were coming soon.

NBA 2K11 – 2010 (PS2, PS3, PSP, Xbox 360, Wii, Windows)

In his third year on the team, Derrick Rose significantly stepped up his performance, playing in 81 matches and scoring an average of 25 points per game. His play improved even more during the playoffs, where he averaged over 27 points per game. Unfortunately for the Bulls, they were defeated by the Miami Heat in the Eastern Conference Finals. After that loss, the Bulls haven’t managed to reach the Conference Finals again since then.

Because of his efforts, Rose’s 2K rating jumped to 85.

NBA 2K12 – 2011 (PS2, PS3, PSP, Xbox 360, Wii Windows, iOS)

Due to his spectacular increase in skill level the previous year, Rose began NBA 2K12 with a rating of 92. This placed him alongside future Basketball Hall of Famer Kevin Durant at the sixth spot. Yet, as things appeared promising, Rose’s fortunes took a sharp turn for the worse.

In the 2011-2012 season, Rose played in just 39 games because of injuries, but managed to score nearly 22 points per game on average. Remarkably, the Chicago Bulls finished with a record of 50 wins and 16 losses, clinching the division title. However, during the opening round of playoffs against the Philadelphia 76ers, he suffered a torn ACL, forcing him to sit out for the remainder of the playoffs.

In just a few short months following the big contract renewal, Rose found himself experiencing some of the most unfortunate periods in his professional life.

NBA 2K13 – 2012 (PS3, PSP, Xbox 360, Wii, Wii U, Windows, iOS, Android)

Unfortunately, Rose played only 10 games during the 2013-2014 season due to a torn meniscus. During these 10 games, his average points per game were 15.9, which was lower than what he scored during his rookie year. Despite this, the Chicago Bulls still made it to the playoffs, but they suffered another defeat in the First Round.

NBA 2K15 – 2014 (PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Windows, iOS, Android)

In the 2K15 version of NBA 2K, after playing just ten games and having only two seasons under his belt, Derrick Rose’s rating decreased to 88. This marked the first time since NBA 2K11 that Rose was not considered one of the top players to choose in the game.

In the 2014-2015 season, Rose played more games but unfortunately tore his right meniscus for a second time. Thankfully, the surgery was successful, allowing him to return and contribute significantly to his team’s playoff run. However, it was evident that his statistical performance dipped compared to previous seasons. His average points per game were 17.7, which was the lowest he had ever recorded in a matchup, and he played for just 30 minutes each game.

Unfortunately, during this time, he tore his meniscus in his left knee and sat out the remainder of the season. The Knicks ended up with a disappointing record of 31-51 in Phil Jackson’s final year as an executive with the team.
