As a long-time admirer of the enchanting world of television journalism, I find myself at a crossroads, much like Hoda Kotb is at this very moment. With a career spanning over two decades and gracing our screens for 18 years on Today, she has become as familiar to us as a trusted friend, always there with her warm smile and comforting presence.
In this phase, I find myself reflecting on changes: Eric Adams is facing charges (hooray!), and Hoda Kotb is parting ways with Today (boo!) after 18 years. She expressed, on September 26, that it was the perfect moment for her to move forward and explore new opportunities as she turned 60. Recalling standing outside surrounded by this magnificent crowd with heartwarming signs, she felt, “This is the peak of my wave.” She mused, “It can’t get better,” and decided that this was the ideal time for her to transition. Kotb has been a part of NBC for 26 years, starting as a reporter for Dateline. She plans to stay on as host until the end of the year. With tears in her eyes, she hinted at staying within the NBC family. Although specifics are yet to be determined, they might want to consider giving her a sitcom.
Currently, Hala Kotb shares the anchor role on Today with Savannah Guthrie, making them the first all-female duo to hold this position in the show’s history. Prior to this, Kotb was a trailblazer for Today, having been the first host of its fourth hour when it debuted in 2007. From 2008 to 19, she co-hosted this time slot with Kathie Lee Gifford. Jenna Bush Hager joined Kotb in 2019, and they have continued as co-hosts since then. This means that NBC either needs to find someone who can take on both of Kotb’s roles or introduce two new individuals. As of now, no successor has been announced, but perhaps Kotb and Adams could swap positions.
