Who is Richard Belzer? Hulk Hogan lawsuit in Mr McMahon explained

As a fan who has followed Richard Belzer’s illustrious career from his days at Saturday Night Live to his long-running role on Law & Order: SVU, I must say that the story of his encounter with Hulk Hogan is one I never thought I’d find myself pondering. It’s a strange twist in the life of an actor who has graced our screens for decades and left an indelible mark on American television.

In Netflix’s series, Mr. McMahon showcases an infamous event in Hulk Hogan’s professional life – his guesting on Richard Belzer’s chat show and the subsequent legal action taken against him.

The main subject of the six-part Netflix documentary primarily revolves around Vince McMahon, the co-founder of WWE who was often controversial and served as CEO, transforming the company into a massive global entertainment powerhouse.

Mr. McMahon detailed his journey to prominence within the WWF, boldly encroaching on other promoters’ domains and enticing rival wrestlers with substantial income offers. His most significant (and perhaps still his most recognized) acquisition was Hulk Hogan, who skyrocketed to fame following his roles in Rocky III and WrestleMania III, where he triumphed over Andre the Giant.

2 years before the notable PPV event, Hogan found himself entangled in a legal dispute which lasted for an astonishing 5 years until it was finally resolved.

Who is Richard Belzer?

As a devoted admirer, I’m particularly fond of Richard Belzer, a versatile talent who has graced both the big screen and the stage as an actor and comedian. He is most renowned for his captivating portrayal of John Munch in crime dramas such as Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and Homicide: Life on the Street.

Remarkably, he’s the unique actor in American television who has portrayed one character, Detective Munch, across an impressive 11 separate shows. This versatile character appeared in popular series such as Arrested Development, 30 Rock, and Netflix’s Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.

Prior to his television fame, he used to entertain crowds on Saturday Night Live and took part in numerous comedy sketches. Additionally, he acted in movies like Fame, Scarface, and Fletch Lives.

As he advanced in age, he released five books delving into the credibility of various conspiracy theories; these included exploring potential hidden agendas surrounding the assassination of John F. Kennedy and the mysterious disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370.

In October 2023, Belzer passed away due to issues related to a lung condition, at the age of 78.

What happened between Richard Belzer and Hulk Hogan?

Back in 1985, just four days before the groundbreaking debut of WrestleMania, I found myself as a guest on Hot Properties, a popular talk show hosted by the charismatic Eddie “The King” Belzer on Lifetime Television.

According to the Netflix documentary, Belzer requested Hogan to execute a wrestling maneuver on him, which led to Hogan applying a headlock (specifically, a front face lock) to him. In reality, however, Belzer wasn’t acting – he actually fell to the ground. As Linda McMahon clarified, Hulk Hogan believed it was just a pratfall (a fall that’s part of the act), but in truth, Belzer was injured during the incident.

In the video, blood is visible dripping onto Belzer’s jacket from his wound. Later on, he advised the audience, “If you aren’t a trained athlete or a professional wrestler, avoid attempting actions you witness athletes or professional wrestlers perform on television.

Beyond that point, I found myself embroiled in a legal battle with Hogan, or Terry Bollea, over personal injury claims.

How much did Belzer win in the lawsuit?

In truth, Belzer didn’t emerge victorious in the court case. Instead, they reached an agreement outside of court, and it has been said that he received a sum of $400,000 as part of the settlement.

Initially, Belzer filed a lawsuit against Hogan, McMahon, and the WWF for $5 million back in 1990. He stated that the incident came dangerously close to taking his life, and according to a sports medicine expert, if he had fallen just a few inches in either direction during the incident, he could have been left permanently disabled or even dead.

In addition, Belzer’s legal team demanded half of his awarded compensation, justifying it with the “anxiety, annoyance, and vital energy drained from this case.

I must admit, it’s not a big deal, but let me share an amusing anecdote. He decided to invest the funds into purchasing a property, and guess where this charming abode is located? In Beaulieu-sur-Mer, France! Can you believe it? He affectionately named it “Chez Hogan.” Quite a character, isn’t he?
