It’s a familiar tale for Coppola, isn’t it? A visionary director, a grand project, and the ever-looming question: will the world embrace it as eagerly as I have embraced his previous works?
The sci-fi masterpiece “Megalopolis,” directed by Francis Ford Coppola and financed by himself as a labor of love, appears set for a less-than-impressive opening weekend at the box office, with estimates suggesting earnings of between $5 million to $7 million.
The Lionsgate-released movie is anticipated to screen at around 1,700 theaters across North America during its initial weekend. Given that it was made at a cost exceeding $100 million, a modest opening would be considered disappointing.
Coppola carries significant expectations with his film “Megalopolis,” as the 85-year-old director of “The Godfather” and “Apocalypse Now” has personally invested $120 million in its production. Lionsgate attempted to capitalize on this disagreement by releasing a trailer featuring quotes from renowned film critics who had initially written off films by Coppola that later became cinematic masterpieces. However, Vulture magazine first disclosed that these quotes were either falsified or generated by an AI, leading Lionsgate to withdraw the advertisement.
Over the coming weekend, “The Wild Robot,” a fresh release from Universal and DreamWorks Animation, is expected to soar in box offices, earning around $24 million to $30 million across 3,900 venues. Some industry experts predict that ticket sales could even exceed $30 million, but others are tentative following last weekend’s animated “Transformers One” which didn’t quite meet expectations with a debut of $24.6 million.
As a passionate cinema-goer, I’m eagerly anticipating the top spot for the newly acclaimed animated adventure to overtake “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” in North America this weekend. Tim Burton’s chilling sequel, the three-time box office champion, has been holding strong against last week’s debutant, “Transformers One”. In a surprising clash, both films have fought fiercely, but “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” managed to edge out “Transformers One” in ticket sales. Now in its fourth week of release, “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” is aiming for another $13 million to $15 million by Sunday. On the other hand, “Transformers One” is expected to earn an additional $12 million to $14 million in its second weekend. The battle for the top spot continues!
The movie ‘The Wild Robot’ was made with a budget of $78 million. It aspires to sustain its popularity like post-pandemic animated family films such as Pixar’s ‘Elemental’ and Illumination’s ‘Migration’. These movies, after their initial releases, continued to attract audiences in subsequent months. As for ‘The Wild Robot’, it has already started screening at international box offices, where it has earned $8 million from eight different markets.
In the animated sci-fi tale “The Wild Robot,” Lupita Nyong’o lends her voice to the main character, ROZZUM unit 7134, also known as Roz. This robot finds itself stranded on an isolated island and learns to thrive in its challenging environment. Throughout the story, Pedro Pascal, Kit Connor, Bill Nighy, Mark Hamill, and Catherine O’Hara voice various animal friends that Roz encounters and befriends. Directed by Jason Reitman, the film titled “Saturday Night” provides a dramatic portrayal of the events leading up to the premiere of Saturday Night Live. Beginning October 11th, this movie featuring Gabriel LaBelle as Lorne Michaels, Cory Michael Smith as Chevy Chase and Ella Hunt as Gilda Radner, will be shown in cinemas nationwide, starting with five venues in New York City and Los Angeles for a limited release.
