As someone who has spent countless hours playing Overwatch 2, I must confess that Sombra has become the bane of my existence, especially when it comes to competitive play. Her stealth abilities and virulent attacks have turned her into an elusive, unstoppable force in the game, leaving me feeling like a sitting duck every time she’s on the enemy team.
The Overwatch 2 community is livid at Sombra’s design, and players are urging developers to rework the hero yet again.
Over the years, Sombra has stirred up a great deal of controversy within the game due to her unique abilities such as becoming invisible and hacking other characters, leaving them exposed for potential attacks.
Moving forward, Sombra was revamped to gain a persistent cloaking ability, enabling her to stealthily approach the opposing team’s backline and take out their support characters with ease.
Although developers have hinted at upcoming changes for this hero, players are becoming increasingly restless, eagerly awaiting significant modifications to her abilities without any further delay.
Members of the r/CompetitiveOverwatch community expressed their weariness, discussing multiple posts about growing weary of encountering Sombra in various matches.
In one post, a player went over the hero’s whole kit, explaining how they don’t find playing against the hero to be fun at all.
They expressed frustration about constantly playing a defensive role against a character who easily reaches backline positions without effort, then waits for even the slightest pause from me before launching a deadly attack. They also mentioned that this character often has an escape mechanism which, in theory, can be tracked, but skilled Sombra players usually have already planned their escape route.
The player stated, “She’s not engaging and not enjoyable to be around. I’d prefer to compete against a thousand Orisas instead of one Sombra.
Most commentators concurred, frequently highlighting the permanent invisibility of the hero as a point of discussion. They often emphasized that such an attribute is seldom seen in other games, where characters typically do not possess a constant cloaking ability.
In the games I’ve played featuring an ‘invis’, there’s usually a subtle indication such as shimmering, outlining, or soft sounds of footsteps. But not Sombra – she is entirely and permanently invisible and soundless. Who would have imagined that design choice?
She’s not enjoyable to compete with, and her underhanded tactics make the experience even more frustrating. It feels like I’m constantly waiting for her in Quickplay, as if I were sitting idly at my spawn.
Someone else said, ‘Sombra spoils Overwatch for everyone except herself,’ which isn’t my experience either. While I understand her character concept revolves around disabling other heroes, I believe it’s time for a redesign of that philosophy. I’d be fine if they completely overhauled her, even if it means altering her lore significantly.
It’s still undecided by the developers what they intend to do about Sombra, but it’s evident that players are growing less satisfied with her character, as she seems to be detracting from their overall gaming experience.
