PS5 Pro Dev Discusses Who It's For And The Hefty $700 Price Point

As a long-time gamer with a wallet that’s seen better days and a collection of game discs that could rival a small library, I must admit I was taken aback by the price tag of the PlayStation 5 Pro. With the original PS5 still within my reach (barely), this new model seems to be aiming at an elite group of enthusiasts who can afford such luxuries.

As a passionate gamer, I must admit that the announcement of the PlayStation 5 Pro, priced at an impressive $700 USD, left me somewhat taken aback earlier this September. However, in a recent interview, PlayStation designer Toshi Aoki shed some light on the matter, explaining that this price isn’t intended to cater to everyone. Instead, it seems the PS5 Pro is designed for a specific segment of gaming enthusiasts who appreciate the premium experience it offers.

Aoki explained to TopMob that this is aimed at dedicated gamers, both those who already own a PS5 and those who haven’t yet but are interested in playing on large-screen TVs. It’s not just for current PS5 owners; it’s for game enthusiasts seeking an enhanced gaming experience, which could also attract new users.

According to Aoki, the PS5 Pro’s advanced features such as its 2 TB SSD, upgraded Wi-Fi 7 connectivity, and novel gameplay technologies are the reasons behind its high price tag. In Australia, the PS5 Pro retails at $1,200 AUD.

Aoki stated, “In essence, what we’re offering is a comprehensive solution designed to deliver outstanding value to our dedicated players.

Regarding the decision to turn the PS5 Pro into a disc-less console while providing an optional disc drive purchase for $80 USD, Aoki explained that it was all about “providing options for the players.

He stated, “We consider our offering as a comprehensive package beneficial for many gamers. For those who prefer physical discs, this is an available choice. However, not every gamer uses discs; some may opt for digital versions. Yet, we provide the flexibility to cater to both types of players. Therefore, I see it as a matter of striking the right balance in our value proposition.

According to analyst Mat Piscatella, he thinks that the potential cost of a PS5 Pro isn’t likely to deter hardcore gamers, and he suggests that the market for the PS5 Pro represents just a tiny segment of the overall PlayStation user base.

Pre-orders for the PS5 Pro will become available this coming Thursday, specifically on September 26th. If you’d like further information, be sure to visit our PS5 Pro preorder guide at TopMob.

TopMob had a firsthand experience with the rumored PS5 Pro, and their editor, Jordan Ramee, didn’t feel an immediate need to upgrade right away.
