This year, Spanish authorities have apprehended five individuals who allegedly defrauded and laundered money. They pretended to be Brad Pitt on the internet to swindle two women out of approximately $350,000, according to The New York Times. The arrests were made public in a statement issued by Spain’s Interior Ministry on September 23rd. Three individuals involved in online fraud were arrested last November, with two more being apprehended in July.
As a devoted Brad Pitt fan, I’d say: “I recently read in The New York Times that someone pretended to be Brad Pitt through an online fan page. They supposedly exchanged instant messages and emails, leading their victims to believe they were actually chatting with the actor himself.
In their deceitful scheme, these internet con artists successfully convinced several women that they had developed such a close bond with a renowned American actor, leading them to believe they were in a romantic relationship with him. Subsequently, these fraudsters requested money from their victims. One woman transferred approximately $168,000, while another sent around $195,500. As part of the ongoing investigation, only about $94,000 has been retrieved thus far.
As a passionate film lover, I can’t help but feel disheartened when I see unscrupulous individuals exploiting the bond between fans and their favorite celebrities. It’s crucial for us all to be vigilant and not engage with unsolicited online messages, particularly if these stars don’t have a social media presence.
The actor known for “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” doesn’t maintain any official social media presence on platforms like Instagram, X (previously Twitter), or others.
