As a long-time fan of Sucker Punch and Ghost of Tsushima, I was absolutely thrilled to see the announcement of Ghost of Yotei during PlayStation’s September 2024 State of Play Showcase! The anticipation for this sequel has been building ever since the original game captivated us all back in 2020.
In this article, we’ll delve into the details of Ghost of Yotei, the highly anticipated follow-up to the cherished Ghost of Tsushima, which boasts a fresh environment, lead character, and plenty of exciting additions. Here’s all you should know!
On September 24, 2024, during the State of Play Showcase by PlayStation, enthusiasts were unveiled with a sneak peek at Ghost of Yotei, the eagerly awaited sequel to the acclaimed Ghost of Tsushima which was released in 2020.
As someone who’s been eagerly awaiting updates on this intriguing game, I must say, the recent reveal has been nothing short of exhilarating! It’s finally unveiled that we’ll be stepping into a new world with this sequel, set in an era of Japanese history yet to be defined. What’s more, the main character is a woman, which promises a fresh and exciting perspective. There’s so much more to discover, and I can hardly wait!
As such, here is everything you need to know about Ghost of Yotei to get you up to speed.
Release window: When is Ghost of Yotei coming out?
According to a post on the PlayStation blog immediately following the State of Play event, the game titled Ghost of Yotei is expected to launch in the year 2025. However, the specific release date within that year is yet to be disclosed.
Since we’ve learned that development for the Iki Island expansion continued until 2021, it’s reasonable to expect that the release of Ghost of Yotei might occur toward the end of 2025.
For the first time, Sucker Punch Productions, known for creating games like Sly Cooper and inFAMOUS, will design a new project exclusively for the PlayStation 5 from scratch.
Ghost of Yotei setting: When does the game take place?
The action in this game unfolds approximately 4 centuries later than the initial storyline, specifically in the region of Mount Yotei which is present-day Hokkaido, Japan.
As I delved deeper into the world of Ghost of Yotei, I uncovered some fascinating background information. In 1603, the region where this game is set was beyond the boundaries of Japan, teeming with vast meadows, snowy expanses, and hidden perils that were as unexpected as they were intriguing.
I must admit, I was taken aback by the stark contrast between this new setting and the structured samurai clans of Tsushima. This fresh environment promises to introduce an entirely novel aspect to the series, enhancing the gaming experience for us dedicated fans.
Who is Atsu? New protagonist explained
In the revised setting, both the timeframe and location have been changed, introducing a fresh character named Atsu as our main focus in “Ghost of Yotei”.
In the upcoming sequel, developers aim to delve into the concept of a fresh protagonist donning the Ghost mask and discovering a brand-new legend, rather than revisiting Jin Sakai’s tale on Tsushima Island.
Although developers haven’t delved deeply into Atsu’s personality and driving forces as of now, the unveiling video depicts her playing a shamisen and carrying a traditional samurai sword.
A shamisen is an ancient Japanese stringed instrument developed around the 16th century. Accompanied by her shamisen and a sword, Atsu will be joined on her quest for underdog vengeance by a wolf friend.
Erika Ishii cast as Atsu
In addition, it’s been verified that Erika Ishii will take on the role of Atsu. Ishii is a highly active voice actress, recognized for her work as Valkyrie in Apex Legends and Ana Bray in Destiny 2. She has also lent her voice to characters across numerous popular video game series like Halo, Call of Duty, Crash Bandicoot, among others.
Thank you, from the bottom of my heart. Working with the whole team was a joy and an honor. đź’›

Upon hearing about her being cast, Ishii responded to the post and expressed, “From deep within me, I thank you. It was a pleasure and privilege to work with everyone.
Gameplay details
In the combat scenes, it’s expected that Atsu’s skill with her sword will play a significant role. However, the ending of the trailer hints at the possibility of firearms being involved as well.
The emergence of guns and firearms in Japan is a huge aspect of the country’s history. The first of its kind to be brought to Japan, the Arquebus, was from the Portuguese in the 1500s.
According to PlayStation, Ghost of Yotei is set to unveil fresh mechanics, enhancements in gameplay, and brand-new weaponry. Consequently, it’s reasonable to anticipate that firearms will be only one of several distinctive gaming elements incorporated into the upcoming sequel.
Don’t worry, as the game plans to innovate based on elements from Ghost of Tsushima, the developers also assure us that they will create something new yet comfortably recognizable for Yotei.
Ghost of Yotei to kickstart a new extended universe for Sony
In recent years, Sony has been putting a lot of effort into expanding their popular intellectual properties into larger cinematic universes. This is evident in projects like HBO’s critically acclaimed The Last of Us TV series and Tom Holland’s Uncharted film. Now, Sony aims to do the same with their Ghost franchise, launching what they call “the start of an official franchise,” which will include at least one movie and other spin-offs, known as Yotei.
It’s common knowledge now that the movie adaptation of Ghost of Tsushima is being handled by Chad Stahelski, who’s renowned for directing the John Wick series.
In the upcoming years, you can anticipate the Ghost series to flourish significantly as Sony aims to extend its reach into various other formats.
