Pokemon Fossil Exhibit promo sells for hundreds despite being reprint of card worth less than $1

Okay, so this is wild! I just saw that a promo Pokemon card they handed out at the Field Museum in Chicago is going for hundreds of dollars on eBay. And get this – it’s literally just a different print of Archeops, a card you’d normally find for less than a buck! It’s crazy how quickly these things can blow up in value.

A special Archeops promotion is happening alongside the new Pokemon Fossil Museum exhibit. The exhibit opened at the Field Museum on May 22, 2026, and will be open until April 11, 2027. It combines real fossils with Pokemon like Tyrantrum and Archeops, exploring the connection between paleontology and the Pokemon world.

Okay, so I just found out if I want to fully experience the Pokémon Fossil Museum exhibit at the Field Museum, I need to buy both a general admission ticket and a special ticket just for the Pokémon exhibit. Good news though – if I have a ticket, I can snag a free Archeops promo card when I go in, but they’re only giving them out while they have them, so I gotta hurry!

A special Archeops promo card has been revealed for the Pokémon Fossil Museum exhibit! You can get it at the Chicago Field Museum from May 22nd to April 11th, but only while supplies last and with a valid exhibit ticket. #Pokemon #PokemonTCG

Archeops promo prices surge on eBay

Even though the promotion just started, sealed Archeops cards are already selling for high prices on eBay. Recent sales range from $175 to $250, and some cards even sold for as much as $340 during the opening weekend.

Pokemon card collectors were surprised by the recent high price tag on a seemingly ordinary reprint. The card isn’t a new, highly sought-after rarity; it’s actually a reprint of Archeops (card number 051/086) from the older ‘White Flare’ set. The main thing that makes this version special is an official Pikachu stamp from the Pokemon Fossil Museum.

You can easily find a standard White Flare Archeops card for under $1. Recent sales on TCGPlayer have shown prices as low as just a few cents for the common version, with PriceCharting reporting averages around $0.20. Even the version with the Poke Ball design is usually less than $0.50. The Master Ball pattern version is more valuable, generally selling for between $4 and $10, depending on where you look.

This means the high resale price of the museum promotional card – over $200 – is likely a temporary surge in value during the opening weekend, and doesn’t represent how much the card is normally worth.

As a Pokémon fan, I’m seeing a huge demand for this promo card, and it all comes down to how hard it is to get! You can’t just order it online or open a pack and hope for the best. You actually have to go to the Pokémon exhibit in Chicago, use a ticket in person, and then pay a $51 entry fee to get it at the museum. It’s a bit of a process, which is why everyone’s so eager to get their hands on it!

The current price of the Archeops promo card might not stay stable for long. Luckily, The Pokemon Company and Field Museum plan to keep restocking it until the museum exhibition finishes on April 11, 2027, meaning visitors have almost a year to get one.

The extended time frame for purchasing items seems intended to prevent the chaotic scenes seen with the Van Gogh Pikachu card release, where resellers and collectors quickly caused items to sell out. To further manage demand, The Field Museum is also limiting purchases – each ticket can only buy a maximum of five Pokemon Fossil Museum items.

Currently, a promotional Archeops card is experiencing a surprisingly unusual surge in value. What was once a common card, worth very little, is now selling for as much as an entire pack of booster cards.
