I’m really excited about this new miniseries they’re making! It’s a dark, futuristic story based on the early novels of Philip K. Dick, and honestly, it feels like it could be huge – a real sci-fi event. They’re aiming for a really faithful adaptation of one of his classics, and with everything going on in the world, the themes feel incredibly relevant and timely. I have a feeling this one could be special and really stand out.

Philip K. Dick is considered a hugely influential science fiction writer of the 20th century. His novel, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, was the basis for the famous film Blade Runner, which starred Harrison Ford. Tom Cruise starred in Minority Report, another film adapted from Dick’s work. Now, yet another adaptation of his writing is being developed.

Netflix’s The Future Is Ours Is Inspired by Philip K. Dick’s The World Jones Made

Published in 1956, The World Jones Made tells the story of Floyd Jones, a unique individual with the power to perfectly predict the future. Because he can see about a year ahead, Jones is incredibly powerful and ultimately becomes the Secretary-General of the United Nations.

Jones maintains absolute power through his extraordinary ability to foresee any challenge to his rule, whether from political opponents, would-be assassins, or rivals. He’s become a figure of almost religious reverence, seen as a savior by many. However, his dominance is threatened by the arrival of someone with different powers, someone who challenges Jones’s conviction that the future is predetermined, and introduces the possibility of change.

Though not as famous as some of his other novels, The World Jones Made explores the important themes of fate versus free will that appear throughout Philip K. Dick’s writing. Published in 1956, this novel is particularly focused on politics, mirroring the fears of the Cold War era. It raises concerns about government surveillance and oppressive control, as the leader’s ability to foresee the future allows him to eliminate anyone who might oppose him.

Like many of his later novels, including Ubik and The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch, The World Jones Made delves into the idea of predicting the future – a theme Philip K. Dick often returned to. The novel introduces characters who can foresee events, laying the groundwork for the concept of “pre-cogs” that would become a key element in his future work.

The Future Is Ours Is Poised to Be a Major Sci-Fi Event

In October 2025, Netflix revealed plans to create a series based on Philip K. Dick’s 1956 novel. The streaming service says the production team includes a diverse group of talented individuals, and they’re incorporating a crucial element from Dick’s original story right from the start.

“The Future Is Ours” is the first Spanish-language TV or film adaptation of a Philip K. Dick story. Created by a Latin American team, the series takes place in 2047, following an environmental disaster. It centers on FedSur, a powerful alliance of South American nations, and their drastic measures to address widespread famine and conflict.

In Dick’s novel, characters from South America play a key role in the fight against Floyd’s control, adding a significant global dimension to the story. This focus on Latin American influences is expected to enrich the production, drawing inspiration from works like One Hundred Years of Solitude and The Eternaut.

The central conflict in The Future Is Ours revolves around preacher Jonas Flores, played by Emiliano Zurita, and police officer Hugo Crussi, played by Enzo Vogrincic. These characters are inspired by Floyd Jones and Crussik from the original novel, but it’s still unclear how closely the miniseries will follow their storylines.

Netflix’s New Project Is Part of a Larger Philip K. Dick Movement

Fans anticipating a miniseries based on Dick’s science fiction novel will be happy to learn it’s part of a growing wave of adaptations. “The Future Is Ours” will be produced by K&S Films, known for “The Eternaut,” and Electric Shepherd Productions, which represents the work of Philip K. Dick’s estate.

I’m a huge Philip K. Dick fan, and I’m so glad his daughter, Isa Dick Hackett, started this production company back in 2007. It’s amazing how they’re bringing his incredible stories to life in new ways! They’ve already made some fantastic films like A Scanner Darkly and The Adjustment Bureau, and the Man in the High Castle series, while different from the book, really captures the spirit of his original novel. It’s great to see his work reaching a wider audience.

Fans of Philip K. Dick have another exciting series to anticipate: Blade Runner 2099 on Prime Video. The show, which continues the story of the original Blade Runner (1982) film and its sequel, is being developed with Ridley Scott, the director of the first movie, and is scheduled to premiere in 2026.

Author Lisa Hackett expressed her excitement about working with Netflix on the first-ever Spanish-language adaptation of her father’s stories. She praised the show, developed by Mateo Gil, as both creative and daring, while also staying true to the heart of the original work. The series is currently slated for release in 2026, although a specific date hasn’t been announced yet.
