After almost nine years of Destiny 2 and five months since the release of its newest expansion, Renegades, Bungie has announced the game will receive its last content update on June 9th. The Washington-based developer plans to conclude content support for the popular online shooter at that time.
Bungie announced in a press release on their website, Bungie.net, titled “Destiny 2: Every End Is a New Beginning,” that they won’t be making any more new content for Destiny 2 after the release of The Final Shape expansion. Instead, Bungie will focus on developing future games, with support from Sony.
The final update for Destiny 2 is called Monument of Triumph. It will add small story moments for some of the game’s most beloved characters, setting them up for future adventures. Along with that, it will include minor gameplay improvements and bring back popular activities like the Sparrow Racing League.
Even though Destiny 2 will still be playable after June 9th – similar to how the original Destiny is today – many players are upset and frustrated by the news. This is especially true because some of the developers at Bungie reportedly didn’t know the game was being sunset, and many are now asking for the development of a new Destiny 3.
Bungie’s Tumultuous Time at Sony
Since Sony bought Bungie in the middle of 2022, the game developer has had a tough time and hasn’t been able to consistently deliver content that both players and Sony are happy with.
Since 2022, most of the new stories added to Destiny 2 haven’t been very well-received. Some, like the Renegades expansion, caused confusion about the game’s direction as it started to include elements from other popular franchises like Star Wars and For Honor.
Beyond continuing to update Destiny 2, Bungie was also supposed to assist Sony in creating other popular, ongoing live service games. Many developers from Bungie later worked on Concord, a hero shooter that unfortunately didn’t succeed, and Bungie subsequently released the extraction shooter Marathon, a project that faced multiple legal problems and delays.
Marathon received a mixed response from players. While many appreciated its futuristic look and exciting player-versus-player combat, it hasn’t become hugely popular. Daily players on Steam have dropped from a peak of around 77,000 at launch in March to about 11,000 now.
Since 2022, Bungie has experienced multiple rounds of layoffs as the company tries to cut costs. These cuts, impacting over 750 employees, have often followed disappointing sales of new content for Destiny 2, and more layoffs are anticipated after June 9th.
Many employees at Bungie were surprised to learn about the shutdown of Destiny 2 – they found out when the official announcement was published on Bungie.net on Thursday, May 21st.
Honestly, it was a shock to all of us. Even the people at Bungie didn’t know Destiny 2 was going offline until they saw the official announcement on their own website on May 21st. It was a total surprise for everyone, even them!
Forbes writer Paul Tassi reports that the vast majority of people at Bungie were surprised by the recent announcement. He adds that a small group of developers working on June content did know about it, but were told not to reveal anything beforehand.
The Fates of Destiny 2 and Destiny 3
Destiny 2’s planned expansion, Shadow & Order, which faced multiple delays, has apparently been cancelled. Its content is now being integrated into the existing Monument of Triumph activity.
The recent halt to new content for Destiny raises questions about the future of Destiny: Rising, the mobile version of the game. However, Destiny: Rising will probably continue to receive updates for some time, as it’s created and managed by NetEaseGames. This makes it the most likely way for players to still enjoy new Destiny experiences now that D2 has stopped releasing content.
While many players are excited about the upcoming Destiny: Rising, a lot of Destiny fans are now asking Bungie and Sony to start working on a completely new game, Destiny 3, especially after the recent announcement about the Monument of Triumph.
Harley Casto launched a Change.org petition asking Sony and Bungie to create a Destiny 3. The petition hopes the new game will offer exciting new stories, adventures, and gameplay to attract a new wave of players.

The petition to create Destiny 3 has quickly gained almost 100,000 signatures since it was announced. However, even if the petition succeeds, development on the game is likely a long way off. Bungie is currently focusing most of its team on creating content for Marathon.
Paul Tassi reports that Bungie isn’t currently working on any new games beyond their existing titles. This means the future games Bungie mentioned are likely still early ideas and haven’t been formally pitched to Sony.
The success of Bungie’s future, and the future of the Destiny franchise, could depend heavily on how well the Marathon game performs. However, given the issues Destiny faced shortly after its release, Bungie might face further layoffs and difficulties soon, particularly as Sony becomes more cautious about investing in large projects due to growing economic concerns worldwide.
