I have to say, I was really surprised by how much I enjoyed Obsession, Curry Barker’s new horror flick. It’s one of those “be careful what you wish for” stories, and it’s clearly resonating with audiences and critics alike – it’s currently sitting at a fantastic 95% on Rotten Tomatoes and is already a big financial success this year. This type of horror, where a wish comes with a terrible price – think The Monkey’s Paw – isn’t groundbreaking, but it consistently delivers some fun movies. It reminds me a bit of one of my favorite underrated films, Needful Things.
Adapted from Stephen King’s 1991 novel and directed by Fraser C. Heston, Needful Things is a lesser-known but enjoyable TV movie from the early 1990s. While it only has a 35% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the film is a fun and exciting take on the story, successfully mixing horror, drama, and crime – a combination King is known for. The movie also features a strong cast, including Ed Harris, Bonnie Bedelia, Amanda Plummer, and Max von Sydow, famous for his role in The Exorcist.
Needful Things Shares Obsession’s Style of Mystical Horror
Stephen King’s Needful Things tells the story of a strange shop that appears in Castle Rock. The shop owner, Leland Gaunt, has exactly what each resident secretly desires. However, he asks them to do things in return – tasks that start out harmless but quickly escalate into mischief and even danger. Sheriff Alan Pangborn is left to restore order as chaos erupts throughout the town.
I noticed while reading this story that it has a really interesting magical element, kind of like a little charm, that messes with people’s heads. It reminded me a lot of the classic tale of Faust, with that whole deal-with-the-devil vibe. Even though the plots are different, the story explores similar ideas about making choices and what happens when you do – it really hits on the same moral points!
The main strength of Needful Things is Max von Sydow’s incredible performance as Leland Gaunt. He perfectly embodies the character as the one who delivers the magical items and is arguably one of Stephen King’s most cunning villains ever portrayed on film.
Okay, so while both movies tackle similar themes, I noticed they really went in different directions. Needful Things especially felt like a pointed look at how capitalism can breed paranoia. But the core message? It’s pretty straightforward: both films are really warning us about the dangers of greed and that old saying – there’s no such thing as a free lunch. They both make it clear that getting something for nothing almost always comes with a hidden cost.
Stephen King Is No Stranger to Stories About Cursed Objects
Stephen King frequently draws inspiration from W.W. Jacobs’ 1902 short story, “The Monkey’s Paw.” Despite countless retellings and parodies in film and literature, King consistently manages to present these familiar themes in a fresh and inventive way.
Besides Needful Things, Stephen King explores the idea that wishes can backfire in several other works. Examples include the novella “The Sun Dog” from Four Past Midnight, and the stories “The Reaper’s Image” and “The Monkey” from Skeleton Crew. “The Monkey” was even made into a movie recently.
Stephen King often features haunted or cursed objects in his stories. While Needful Things is well-known for its cursed items, he frequently returns to the idea of cursed cars in his novels.
This theme appears in his 2002 novel, From a Buick 8, but is best known from his 1983 book Christine. It’s also similar to the 1983 film adaptation of Needful Things, directed by horror legend John Carpenter.
Needful Things is available to stream on YouTube.
