Netflix’s Near-Perfect Sci-Fi Series Was So Good, It Changed Streaming Forever

Netflix has always been ambitious with its streaming content. While early hits like House of Cards and Orange is the New Black showed the kinds of stories Netflix wanted to create, those shows weren’t entirely based on original ideas.

Both House of Cards and Orange is the New Black were based on previously published works – the former on a 1990 BBC series and a 1989 novel by Michael Dobbs, and the latter on Piper Kerman’s memoir. Netflix was eager to offer shows with complex themes and diverse representation, but preferred to launch these programs by adapting stories that already had an established audience.

Netflix’s first original scripted drama, Marco Polo, was based on historical events but wasn’t successful. Following this, Netflix became cautious about creating entirely new drama series, and none of its original dramas ran for more than three seasons.

Everything changed with the debut of Stranger Things in 2016. This sci-fi series, set in the 1980s, quickly captured viewers’ attention with a compelling first episode. The show’s initial season proved that Netflix could deliver both daring, sophisticated programming and genuinely high-quality, original content. And that was just the start of what Stranger Things would achieve.

Stranger Things Tapped Into Just The Right Amount Of Nostalgia

From the very beginning, Stranger Things clearly drew inspiration from 1980s movies and culture. The show’s first seasons, particularly with their lovable group of friends battling monsters while playing Dungeons & Dragons, felt like a blend of E.T. and It. The show’s look and feel—from the big walkie-talkies and old-fashioned bikes to the clothes and hairstyles—completely captured the atmosphere of the 80s.

Although Stranger Things clearly draws inspiration from classic sci-fi and horror films of the 1980s, it still felt remarkably fresh and unique. The show introduced truly original elements, like the character Eleven—known for her nosebleeds and fondness for Eggo waffles—and the intriguing world of “the Upside Down.”

Stranger Things felt both fresh and familiar, like a modern story that still captured the spirit of classic tales. What’s really remarkable is that it successfully blended heartwarming nostalgia with stunning visuals, making it some of the best television out there today.

Stranger Things Proved Just How Far An Original Concept Can Go

Stranger Things wasn’t just a hit TV show; it became one of Netflix’s most important properties. It consistently drove huge viewership numbers with each new season and was a major draw for events like pop-up shops. What started as a unique idea from relatively unknown creators has now become a valuable and expansive brand of its own.

Alongside the popular Netflix series Stranger Things, a Broadway play called The First Shadow was performed and even impacted the show’s later seasons. Following the end of the original series, an animated spin-off titled Tales from ’85 debuted in April 2026. This animated series features the familiar Stranger Things characters, but with a new cast providing their voices, and has already been picked up for another season.

As a huge movie and TV fan, I’ve been watching how Stranger Things really launched the careers of its young stars – Finn Wolfhard and Sadie Sink are everywhere now! And it was amazing to see Winona Ryder get a real resurgence too. But honestly, the Duffer Brothers themselves became big names because of the show. Now, anything they touch gets attention – I immediately checked out Netflix’s Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen just because they were involved!

It’s remarkable how much of a lasting impact Stranger Things has had, especially considering the mixed reactions to its more recent seasons. While everyone loved the first episodes and early seasons, the final season proved divisive – people disagreed about everything from how long it took to release to the quality of the special effects and even how the story ended for the characters.

Even devoted fans were disappointed with the series finale, leading to speculation that a truly conclusive ending was intentionally kept hidden or that Netflix significantly altered the creators’ original vision.

Even though the final season didn’t quite live up to all expectations, Stranger Things had already become a cultural phenomenon. It proved its lasting appeal and cemented its place as a truly unique series – something many shows only hope to achieve.
